The traditional BusinessZone.co.uk and UK Business Forums Christmas Gadget Countdown is now up and running and we are looking for your suggestions for the most desirable bit of electronic kit or software for 2009.

Just like one of Santa's elves, executive peripherals editor Nigel Harris has been sorting through the potential contenders and posting his suggestions in his Gadget Zone blog on our sister site AccountingWEB.co.uk.

Harris is an accountant and is entitled to his views, but what really interests us is what gadgets and executive toys appeal most to entrepreneurs. Our definition for the term "gadget" is pretty wide. It doesn't necessarily have to be a work-related tool and can be hardware, software or a consumer electronics device. Basically, what is the thing you would most like to find under your tree on Christmas morning?

The Gadget of the Year will be awarded on the basis of popular acclaim via comments posted below and on BusinessZone.co.uk. As with previous years, similar polls are running on other Sift Media communities including Finance Week, HRzone.co.uk and TrainingZone.co.uk. Alongside each community winner, we will put forward a Sift Media Gadget of the Year.

May the best device or program win!

HTC Hero Phone

It really is a great peace of kit for a business if you are constantly on the move.

Hope this helps

a HTC Diamond, is the hero better?:|

I bought a UBISURFER, thought it was going to be the answer to my new found freedom on the train. Have hardly used it, had it since July, will have to practice with it.

My Trusty SatNav

I resisted getting on for ages because the early ones were hassle

Found one that i could input 20 addresses and hit a button and it would sort them into an optimised route.:D

If it broke now i would be back in the dark ages:eek:

It has to be the SatNag.
I use mine far more than any other gadget I have.

Bucking the trend once again this year, the UKBF members on this thread voted for HTC's Hero smartphone in preference to the Apple iPhone, which carried off the prize on both our sister sites Business Zone and AccountingWEB.co.uk (but only after an 11th hour vote on the latter site).

Overall, the iPhone is still convincingly ahead in the popular vote. HTC's cause was not helped by votes that were split between the Android-powered Hero and the Windows Mobile HD2 model.

I have to take my hat off to you people. Two years ago, UKBF members chose the iPhone as their Gadget of the Year when the popular vote on other sites favoured Nintendo's Wii console. Our rationale then was that entrepreneurs who paid for their own business technology were a little more focused on the practical paybacks than accountants, trainers and HR managers who got kit from their firms.

This year, however, when the other communities have finally acknowledged the iPhone's dominance, you're all looking for the Next Big Smartphone and it appears to be coming from HTC's direction.

I'll be very interested to see if the other sites follow your lead in next year's Christmas Gadget Countdown and whether the iPhone era is on the wane.

Merry Christmas everybody and thanks for taking part and helping to broaden our understanding of consumer and business electronics!
