Advisory Fuel Rates

First of all, apologies if there is another thread on this. I couldn't see one....

I see from http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/cars/advisory_fuel_current.htm that HMRC are advising new rates for mileage.

I'm assuming that this advisory note just applies to company cars, and that 40p per mile is the norm for those of us without a company car.

Yes. 40p per mile up to 10,000 miles, then 25p. However, the employer can claim input VAT based on the fuel element of the advisory rate. So for a car over 2 litres, the VAT claim is 3/23 of 20p per mile. Same VAT claim even if the mileage rate is 25p. You need fuel VAT receipts to cover this

Hmmm yea, it's about time the 40p was revised with the fuel costs these days but we can't expect this from Gordon - how many years now is it since this was done, it's so long ago I can't remember.

Agreed but not going to happen (sad face). If they change it it's likely to be CO2 emission based...
