    Hi everyone,
    I am fairly new to these forums so please bear with me.
    I have recently resigned from my current role and am looking to set up my own retails business. I started 8 months ago making handmade cards, which have being selling steadily, giving me some extra pocket money. I decided that I would like to use my love of creative and design and set up a retail unit selling modern art, and home accessories, and jewellary.
    I have considered setting up a website first to start selling the items as I am having a problem finding a property, and thought that I might be able to make a little money whilst looking for the right place.
    I am hoping from this forum that I will be able to get some advice from members who have already set up a website first, artists looking for a place to sell their items, designers of glassware, home accessories etc, or jewellary designers. Any advice that you can give me on how to set up my business and the the ways you found to be suitable.

    Welcome to the forums.

    Have you ever thought about approaching your local art college or sixth form and get the students to display on your site or shop. If the piece of art sells then you could take a percantage or pass on a pre-arranged fee to the artist. I am sure they would welcome both the exposure and the cash, and you would be able to stock up with a minimum of outlay

    Thank you Nigel for your suggestion. i am waiting for feedback from my local art colleges. I also need to find some designers of modern house accessories, and glassware and am currently looking for colleges who run these courses.

    hmmmm, would you be better getting somewhere with a good footfall or producing a website which like so many on here are struggling to find traffic and convert it to sales?

    Keeping a successful website is a lot like making love to a beautiful women, i.e. it is not something I believe you can do in your spare time while you set up a shop and expect to still be there doing the business after a few days/weeks inattention.

    You might be better to focus your energies on one or other area and perhaps talking to one or two of the people who are running very similar enterprises on here to see how long they have been going, how much traffic they get and whether in your opinion it has really been worth the hard work?
