What are the pros and cons of either using iFrames or embedding videos
    when putting them on sites?

embedding is generally better than using any kind of frames, for seo purposes. I guess i-frames would be a quick fix solution, but if the source is unavailable you'll get a big fat 404 in the middle of your iframe.

Didn't Iframes get the dirty 10 yard stare about 8 years ago? Apart from the technical faux pas don't they also cause issues for SEO or is that no longer an issue?

    The SEO is irrelevant.
I only want to put a basic video on a page, by using an iframe I can use
a splash image first, haven't worked out how do do it yet with embedding

Try JW player - longtailvideo.com/players/jw-flv-player/ - will handle embedded media just nicely.

Thanks, I've already started using a good player, still trying to work out
the best way of using it though.
