    My parents site has a very low google ranking but is constantly top of the ratings in Yahoo. Has anybody got any quick ideas of how I might improve it?

    I am in the process of fixing all the minor bugs with the site at the moment so I might as well try and improve its search engine ratings.

    Some basic bits to consider would be...

    1. Move the title tag to the top of the head section, and whack 4-5 keywords into it.
    2. The description and kewords tags are not well optimised, more focused on their company name than worthwhile search terms.
    3. None of the images have keyworded ALT tags, add some as they are currently techie description rather than search engine friendly.
    4. Same goes for the menu.
    5. Dont use frames/iframes.

    That would be enough to get your listings very much improved :)

    Thanks, I have not used any frames, its actually overflowed div but it looks like its IFRAMEs. The site is pure CSS/XHTML with no tables or frames so the structure has good scope to become search engine friendly the problem is the content.

    Some of the images are actually just CSS background images. I will do them things you said.

    SEO is my weak area I should get a book on it really :).

    Mark W3C is the world wide web consortium its basicaly the people that develop world wide webs standards. For a site to be properly coded it must confirm to those standards. It ensures your site will work on any platform including mobile phones and PSPs etc.

    Thanks that link was very helpful, I know about the W3C issues. Also its not interactive for a reason as my parents only want a brochure site.

    The linking too issue will be quite hard to do but I will make sure its listed on all the free directories.

    I have a much better idea of where I might be going wrong now.
