Yesterday, some salesman called to me and propose me for 1995GBP per year (payment after 2 month with 199.5GBP per 10 months) third place in my local area for 6 keywords. Is it worth ? I'm living in Scotland (Glasgow-Edinburgh) so they told me that 800 visitors they had in last month....

I think that is it worth because it is third position from around 80 so....

Please give me some advice...

It's best if you put an effort to get a high position in Google.co.uk for your website. These kind of listings are not always the best way to go because you risk spending a lot and not get the return of investment you are expecting.

If you are a tradesman I would say yes definitely, otherwise I would talk with other local businesses and/or see if your competition is in there.
There have been a few YP threads on here recently, I suggest you read those too, use the search as I can't remember when they were, those may give you some more info.

Yells visitor numbers should be taken with a pinch of salt. Definitely knock a "0" off if you want an accurate number.

Yell told me that the number of enquiries that the had for "house clearance" for ayrshire was more than google told me the total searches that they had on a national basis. Deeper delving in the Yells definition was searches beinging with "house". Not that good for me.

Personally, I would spend the money on investing in a good PPC campaign.

I once received a listing offer for a 3 years period and the price was 5000GBP. The salesman called for about a moth before he gave up. Definitely PPC is the way to go.

Do you ever use Yell yourself?

I'm sure likev most people you can get everything you need from a search engine. There is no need to use Yell to find a tradesman or other service.

But even if you do get 10 referrals per month from Yell, each one has cost you £20. For that same £20 you could get up to 200 referrals using adwords.

This whole "Yell is useless unless you are a tradesman" and "No-one uses Yell, everyone uses Google" is becoming a bit of an over-played cliche.
Yell isn't an alternative to Google or a 'rival' to Google, but needless to say Google can perform the functions many of Yell's customer's desire.

On the flip side of that Yell isn't flooded with national companies who've optimised the tights off themselves to appear in every town in the UK only to hand the job they get from the enquiry to a local person at a higher fee. I genuinely prefer using business directories to find take-aways and any other kind of local business, I'm genuinely not a fan of Google's local searches at the moment but they are improving.

Like I've said many times and I don't think it's unagreeable: Do your own research, gain stats for current advertisers in your class and/or area, weigh up the cost vs the volume of work you need to make cash and establish if it's worth it.

Yell is a pay for prominence business directory - it works for plenty of different businesses, not just tradesman.
...it's performance cannot be judged in the same way a pay-per-click campaign's performance is judged.

If you are a tradesperson I would highly recommend listing yourself on www.ratedpeople.com.

Yell.com has its positives but as a business trying to get yourself set up correctly on there if you have a paid for listing, well, you need to have some patience that's all I can say! The rep will be uber helpful until you part with your cash, getting help after that may be tricky!

Agree with what others have said about investing in SEO.

My friend did this, paid about £350 a few years ago but he only ever had people calling him trying to sell their stationery etc. A lot of calls and persistantly having to field them was a real pain for him.

Yell actually spend a lot of money on marketing yell.com.
the have also placed a connection the 3 broadband connection which personally have used to locate a taxi and hairdressers.

So really the question is is there something better out there for you to spend your money on?
Yes. Google.
Do you have enough money to spend on google?
£2,000 a year is not alot.
Hence yell works.
Not brilliant but cheapish.
Me personally i would use a google map and get more traffic.

I've only ever heard very bad things about Yell.

£1995 could give you some professional sales copy and a marketing campaign which brings a lot of visitors and customers in. Don't waste it on Yell.
