Are there any legal implications to be aware of when handing out leaflets at a tube station?

Hi,

I cannot see why there would be, as long as you don't stick them to anything, what can they do. Worse that can happen is for them to tell you to shift.

I see many people doing it.

I guess as long as you don't do it inside the station enterance or abstuct the exits it is not a problem

Yes there are implications.

First, if you give out leaflets in the tube station you are on private property and can be deemed to be trespassing and possibly 'trading' on private property.

Second, as I understand it that if you wish to distribute leaflets on the public highway you need a licence from the local authority.

I strongly suggest you obtain permission from the London Underground and the local authority in any event. Those who are currently giving out leaflets may well have the permission or may well have been fined at a later date.

I'm not sure what the requirements are but you may want check whether you are responsible for cleaning up the mess afterwards! I was at Twickenham yesterday and most of the cards and leaflets they were handing out ended up on the streets. It seems pretty much the same at most places where leaflets are handed out, so not only do you have the high wastage, but also some littering consequences which you may end up responsible for.

May be OK but may not be sufficient since he only works for the land owner. Its best to ask London Underground direct at least then you will have covered most if not all eventualities.

If you are on the public highway, then its the local authority because you must have a licence to trade on the streets, which I think is a fair procedure.

Twickenham, is where we are based! I find the charity fundraisers more irritating especially when the same person asks you each direction you walk!
