I was hanging out with my sister (who works for a big company) a couple of months ago and she mentioned she'd been working remotely from home that week.

"It's great, isn't it!", I said enthusiastically.

But, no, she preferred being in the office with all the banter.

Different strokes for different folks.

It's good and bad. There are no interruptions, but it can be easy to get sidetracked. It's nice and quiet, but there's nobody to talk to. Etc...

..which is nice until a delivery person turns up at, say, 3.00 and look at you as if you're some sort of work-shy benefit scrounger.

That happens to me all the time. My postman seldom sees me with my clothes on.

Even better when it's a customer.....

I've had them turn up unannounced on a Sunday morning, and won't get the hint that I don't want to chat with a dressing gown on and a towel round my head.

Also at 9pm on on Monday night when I've just gone to bed - looking at me like I'm mad - but what they don't realise is that most Monday's I'm up at 4.30am and at my desk at 5.30am because of my husband's work patterns.

Funnily enough I had a guy came to my door last night at 8pm just as my wife and I were about to sit down to dinner. People don't seem to understand that those of us who work at home also have working hours.

Its not easy working from home if you have you children that are not at school they think daddy is here to play, cuddle feed them. I need to work in the living room as we have a small 2 bed house and no spare room.

So i get constantly mithered by my lovely kids, then my eldest comes home from primary school at 3 and he does not understand that dad works from home, he thinks that only works when he goes out of the house.

During all this as well my girlfriend wants me to talk to here or take her shopping. she is probably worse than the kids. when i try telling her that i am working, she starts arguing.

I thought it would be great working from home. suppose it would be great if i could lock my self away.

I need an office but cant afford one yet, as only been going for a month now.

Working from home goes from great to terrible.

Great when you actually can get stuff done. Terrible when you're there to do this and that for the other half. I also find if I have to deal with a scraming child in the morning it puts me in a bad mood for work later.

no its always good to have an environment where you av collegues and other office staff. working at office is like working out at gym. u can evn work out at ur home but u prefer goin to a proper gym or club where others also come. its in us to show off whateva it is whether it is a good muscular body or the leads we get or any office task we complete. we humans work better in an evnivronment where we face competition.

therefore its more productive work in an office den working from home which also makes u lazy and changes your attitude towards other thngs as well.

Yes I agree, I know I'm lazy working from home when I get up at 4.30am on a Monday morning and am in my home office working from 5.30am on deadline day. And you'll often find me still there gone 7pm in the evening.........

Give me strength to find some more energy to work a little harder........

There are few downsides to working from home, ie.

Your pals and family think you don't 'work' at all and that includes your kids!

Today I showed my 5yr old and 7yr old mummy's work.

I showed them some printed articles, the invoices and my bank details to show that 'yes' mummy does get paid for what she does at home.

I did this after my 7yr old demanded to know where the money was to show for my 'work'.

Outrageous!!

Also, Bf keeps asking when I'm going to get a proper job.

I keep reminding him I earn more doing this than I would doing a 'proper job' (the type that fits around kids that is) but he can't get his head around it.

His family also correct themselves when discussing people who work cash in hand as if being worried they'll offend me.

What offence? All my work goes through the books!

Then I am asked why my children are in after school club during the holidays for 3 days a week. I remind them 'I work'.

They just do not get it.

How can I 'work' with kids in my office and TinyPops in the background?

Rant, moan, waffle, grrrrrrrrrrrr

It's NOT!

I have an entire paragraph in my head waiting to be typed, he starts yipperty yapping and boom..........gone! Hmpf

I just don't work now when people are about.

It's great reading your posts... I can empathise too!!

I am home based (although do travel to meet clients from time to time) and I love it... Until recently I was working as a Senior Manager for a marketing agency but I was very frustrated with not being able to do what I wanted to do (predominantly competitor analysis and copywriting) so I have become freelance...

And now instead of spending an hour a day getting ready for work with my suit on and heels to sit there typing all day, I can sit at home in my dressing gown and spend that hour more productively!! :)

Yep, that's a perk!

I wouldn't have it anyother way.

Maybe we should get our dressing gowns embroidered with our logo's to clarify to posty, family and children that this is our official work uniform!

My other half spends a lot of time in his dressing gown and it makes my blood boil! They are the one of the most hideous looking garments in the 'wardrobe'. It turns me off big time lol

a friend of mine tells me, whenever he gets an out-of-hours sales person kncking on the door, he and his wife start making out!

it used to be effective, but now they get camera sales people calling every night.

Work from home's just a thought that people wants to be relief sometimes. But for a business man, for personal career, work from home is an excuse for some of people.

I have just recently started working from home also and my other half doenst understand that the stock I hold I wont sell its self straight out of the cupboards nor will it stick itself on my website in the past 11 days I have got the design of my website done and also some products and pictures uploaded and thats about it.

she thinks its ok for me to sit and talk to her all day and also deal with our 8 month old daughter (i.e feed,paly and change her) its not easy and being in a 2 bedroom flat means I have no space for an office so have to work in the lounge as cant even get a shed at the bottom of the garden as we dont have gardens in the upstairs flats.

when she finally realises that i do work from home it would be so much easier :)

Working from home is really interesting and I have been working at home for last 3 year, but really missing my friends ..:(

I work from home as a PR manager for a software company. The company sells its software around the globe, so my job is to communicate with media people around the world - Australia, the USA and Europe. And that's good because I can be flexible - talk to journalists from the USA ein the evening, do some other tasks during regular working hours and allow some free time for myself at the same time.
So for me working from home is great.

I am a writer and even I work from home. The best thing I like working from home is the convenience. I work without any pressures and meet my deadlines without anyone standing on my head.

I love working from home, being able to select my work hours is something i had yearned for while doing 8-6 or 9-5 jobs over the years. I realised i wanted to set up my business and that's what I did, I don't think I could go back to working in an office with set hours. Also, being able to nip down the pub at 1pm for a few cheeky stellas and burger isn't the worst thing in the world either! ;)
