If you had to choose the most interesting cities in the UK which would you pick?

I am looking for the top six.

I mean interesting in terms of history, culture and architecture.

The best for me is York. It's old, new, trendy and old fashioned all in one. A very beautiful and interesting place to go

I love Chester for the same reasons Jayne likes York - it's such a mix of architecture and atmosphere. There's the river, canal, the cool little galleried shops (can't remember what they're called) and steeped in history.

Also got some lovely bars and restaurants for nightlife.

Edinburgh for me! Lived there for 2 years and wish I stayed.

Lincoln has got to be in with a shout. Tom Hanks was here last week doing some filming in the Cathedral. We have the Magna Carta, the Castle, the oldest house in England, Bishop's Mansion as well as all the Roman walls and gates which are still being used today.

On the younger side we have the Marina with all the big power cruisers moored up. There are new restaurants and bars springing up all across the city and down near the river we have the most modern University in the UK. Businesses are flooding in, unemployment is low and within 5 minutes you can be in open countryside with panoramic views watching the Red Arrows practice overhead each day.

As for Liverpool, I used to go past the Jaguar factory off Speek Boulevard and was amazed when they erected the Mersey Wave to greet new visitors, fantastic piece of engineering! Went back a week later and someone had nicked it!

Has to be either Leicester or Southampton

Both have roman walls, museums and great shopping. Soton has the waterside developments and docks and leicester the diwali festivals etc with the best Rugby team in the world.

Mind you I don't live in either one preferring the blue flag beaches of Bournemouth and the motorbike meetings in Poole! (but they're not cities)

There are places being mentioned here that I have never really considered. In fact I may extend my list to greater than 6.

I am asking because I have a business idea (yes, another!!) but I need to make sure I involve the best cities to give it the best possible chance.

Not that I'm biased or anything living here, but Newcastle/Gateshead are fantastic cities and been much improved with massive regeneration over the past few years.
The Quayside has wonderful architecture: Tyne Bridge, Millennium Bridge, Baltic Arts Centre and not forgetting the fantastic glass Sage Music Centre. There are a plethora of bars and restaurants along the riverside to sit in and admire it all from.
On top of this we (Newcastle that is) have a fab football club and stadium and excellent shopping as well as a great public transport system.

And to top it all.....it's full of good old Geordies - you can't get friendlier than that!!!

1. Manchester
2. Liverpool
3. Leeds
4. Hull (don't ask me why - i just like it!?!)

I love Chester and York as well visited them on many occasions (particularly Chester City Centre which has some lovely buildings)

I vote for the capital cities of the six countries - five of them Celtic - of which the United Kingdom is composed. (Strictly, Mann is not officially a part of the UK, but it would be a shame for the Manx to miss out.)

- Edinburgh (Scotland)

- Caerdydd (Wales)

- Truro (Cornwall)

- Belfast (Northern Ireland)

- Douglas (Mann)

- London (England)

As capital cities, they all have a long history. Representing different cultures, they all have something unique to offer.

I am quite worried about you.

Anybody who puts Leeds and Hull in their top 5 cities has got problems!

The only good thing to come out of Hull is the A15!

What's wrong with Leeds? It's just like London but smaller. There many old and beautiful buildings in Leeds, and more shops that you can visit in a week. It's a very busy city and thousands visit it every day. Oh and most important, it's not far from me :lol:

I used to live in Sheffield and travelled through Leeds every week. It is changing with lots of new things happening sure, but to put it in the top 5 is a bit too much.

The good thing about Leeds however, is that it is not far from Wakefield and there is a cracking little bakery there.
