    ....Hi everyone,

    I am attending a 'Black Tie' thingy tonight - I know it generally means tuxedo for men and long evening dresses for women but is it acceptable to wear a just above the knee, chinese style dress? And is it ok to wear a suit with tie for men?

    Advice much appreciated...

    [/quote]If it says Black Tie, then the men need to wear tuxedo etc. For the women it can be cocktail dresses or full evening dresses, depends how formal the do is
    We were only given tickets this afternoon and don't have evening dresses or tuxedos!!!!!

    It's an awards ceremony....guest speaker is Sir Alan Sugar, there's dining in the marquee with a canape menu

    You wouldnt get turned away for wearing either however you will be in a very small minority and it may effect some peoples judgement of you (potentially possitively but more likely negatively) which is a consideration as these kinds of things tend to really be about networking

    If you are dining in a marquee with Alan Sugar and you are representing an Entrepreneur Magazine I would try and get that dinner jacket hired or borrowed pronto.

    Afterall if it was acceptable to come as you are, why would they bother saying 'Black Tie'?

    You might be able to buy a dinner jacket at Moss Bros on the high street - Top Hat has one and it has been a good investment, it only cost £80 in the sale.

    Women have it a bit easier but something with a degree of diamonte is preferable!
