Problems With Wireless Internet

Hi Their,

I'm on one of the 3 computers i have in my house. their is one base station and i use one of the computers that has a belkin wireless arieal. The trouble is i recieve low connection and ive tried everything to make it recieve a better connection but it just ent happening.

Anybody expeirence the same problems or can give me some advice?

Hi. A whole bunch of things can cause this problem. Let's try to eliminate them one at a time. First things first, if you put the base station very close (say about a foot) from the computer, do you get a strong signal?

Let me know and we can take it from there!

I currently cant have the base station that close. it is located in a downstairs room and i am in the room near it.

I have exactly the same problem, mine is Belkin as well! If I am in the same room then my reception is great, as soon as I go into my front room or dining room the connection goes low and then drops completely

yeh! exactly the same problem its meant to travel as far as the garden! its a pile of crap to be honest just needed some help on anything that could improve it!

I wasn't suggesting you actually use it next to the base station (that would be pointless!!); rather, just put it there for a minute to test the signal strength.

There are a number of factors that could be causing your problem, but it's difficult to know which without testing. It could be your card, your building, interference etc.

One thing worth trying - you should find the higher the channel number, the (slightly) stronger the signal. If you're in the UK, you should be able to use 13.

Also, if it's just for internet connectivity, you could try disabling 802.11g and switch to 802.11b only if your unit supports such a setting.

wireless troubleshooting is a little taxing because there can be so many reasons for a weak connection.

I use belkin too and have no problems in my house. If you have the ethernet one with a small aerial on the back have you tried pointing it towards the base station? If you have the USB one try using the USB extention cable supplied and move the adapter as close to the base station as possible with the head facing the station.

Using these steps I can make the reception move from poor to excellent in my upstairs bedroom (base station downstairs).

i also had the same problem with Belkin, and they didnt know what was wrong either. So i changed to Netgear, costs more but it loads better. Best wireless network equiptment i have ever had. And i have had alot!

The problem is I had netgear and had the same problem with them..lol..maybe I have particularly thick walls in my house, but being a newbuild nine years ago..I dont think so!

I am still under my year guarantee so think I will take it back and see what they say.

We just moved and the wireless system fell over because another wireless network is near to us. I changed the SID (which I wasn't using before) and changed the channel number which fixed it.

I get great access off our laptops but my PDA can be a bit patchy depending where you are in the house.

I had the same problem with Linksys - I moved the base station next to the window and it works.

I always had the same problems with belkin, now with netgear and havent had any problems, 108mbps all the time and the base unit is on the other side of the house, probably the thin walls in my new build home though!!

I had huge problems with Belkin and a number of phone calls to them didn't resolve the problem - so I took back and got Trendnet - which works fine....

...saying that I had a recent problem whereby the connection dropped and it turned out to be a new surge protector four way plug I had bought - it can be the strangest things!

I have even seen a connection drop because of spot lights being on. When they were turned off the connection shot up - unfortunately I can't remember the make.

I can't imagine what the problem could be. We have four laptops in the house on with notebook card things and never had a problem with connection.

I would have thought belkin would have been able to solve it!

Suggest you get a local Wireless network support firm to conduct a survey and advise on improvements.

If you're not too far away we could offer to do this for a fixed fee.

If you're talking about a proper PC. as opposed to laptop, with a PCI WiFi card, please check that the power cables to the PSU are routed clear of the WiFi aerial.

Anything else you do will be worthless if your aerial is sitting in an electro-magnetic field created by mains cables.

Once you've sorted that out, a survey might be a good idea if the problem persists. If you don't, it'll be their very first suggestion - guaranteed.

Just an update on this I changed mine to Netgear today and...SUCCESS...it works. Definitely worth the extra £20 it cost me..lol!
