Live is dead - Long live the Bing!

Live, then Kumo, and now Bing. Will changing the name be of any help?

Bing - that like bling but without the glitter.

Let me check my stats: google.se - 1.3%, live.com - 1.1%. So more people from Sweden are searching for an English language site using google than the rest of the whole world are using live.

I like the idea of decision/knowledge engines, Wolfram Alpha is good one. I can see a place for bing, could we be seeing the next evolution of Search Engines?

The main problem with Microsoft is that they visually change things so often, confusing the consumer and annoying geeks like me. Google have got it down to a fine art, their system has barely changed since it was first created: a white page, with their logo and a search box for their default page, they've expanded to iGoogle, but only people who have the patience to set it up use that (I do). The main changes that Google make are small, insignificant changes that the normal viewer would not recognise or even realise is there, meaning that they've got a search engine that is constantly improving, but has never changed visually, so all consumers remember and know how to use the engine. Whereas, you have MSN/Live/Bing that's constantly changing name, aesthetic and methods, they've got their business model all wrong:

Create a product --> Develop it into something people use and like --> develop it aesthetically --> change the name --> change the interface --> confuse people --> develop it so people start using it again --> change the interface --> change the name --> confuse people

and so on and so forth...

I think it's been well summed up by Seth Godin: Bing, of course, stands for But It's Not Google. The problem, as far as I can tell, is that it is trying to be the next Google. And the challenge for Microsoft is that there already is a next Google. It's called Google.

Whenever I hear of this search engine the first thing which will always come to mind is Chandler Bing from friends and his geekish, sarcastic ways.

Bing is now live and I mean 'live' because it is no longer 'Live' if you know what I mean. :|

The search results seem just the same as the 'Live' ones. The only real difference I can see is that hovering over each result brings up another 'hover link' that has an mini preview with 'site links' for each site. Useful but hardly ground-breaking.

I prefer the Image search to Google but I did with 'Live' and they have just used the same one here.

Just tried Bing.
Looks exactly the same results as live.
I hope it takes off as my SERPS are far beter in Bing than Google.

Has any one worked out were Bing get their local business listings from.
I tried to add a UK one but Bing only has a US application form

I don't understand why they change their name all the time... it's just confusing but I have to say they've generated so much publicity about it

They have, but at the end of the day, people aren't moving at a good enough rate away from the big G.

well we have been getting a nice bit of traffic from Bing.so I will reserve judgement.

Just to remind , ignore the lesser engines at your peril.:)

Different type of visitors then I guess... not too sure of the type of demographics of Bing users.

I don't know how (though I'm guessing it's probably when I updated to IE8)... but Bing has taken over my computer. Any links I click have Bing search in front of them... Bing gets a thumbs down from me.

I agree.
I wonder what we will see next?
As undoubtedly when "Bing" fails/microsoft get bored, a whole new search engine will come out.

But..I think bing does look quite suitable for what it is.
It does remind me of a search engine that a handful of ex-microsoft devs created:
cuil.com

Well, good luck to microsoft. Lets hope this one stays around?
