Georgian cuisine

My wife is Georgian and I have a property in Georgia and will be setting up a 'Georgian living' website offering for sale/let Georgian properties.

Hands On Group is planning to set up a Georgian restaurant offering georgian cuisine, entertainment, wine and to wrap up, culture.

There are already two Georgian restaurants in North London and they are not as authentic as they should be. It is for this reason we are planning to set one up in a more exclusive area where wining, dining and culture is more appreciated.

I am seeking your views on this idea generally and your perceptions to Georgian cuisine.

For those that do not know, the Georgia I am talking about is the Republic of Georgia.

Hi - I voted 'not sure' because I have no idea what Georgian food is like - but if a Georgian food place opened locally I would at least go and have a look at the menu.

However I am very unlikley to look up 'Georgian ' in the good food guide because, at the moment , the awareness is so low and it would never occour to me...

Because of this I would not care how 'authentic' it was - in fact if the non-authentic place served food more to my liking I would go there...

Whenever I visit Moscow, I tend to visit a Georgian restaurant there. I enjoy the food very much.

As the poll stands currently it's split 50% Yes, 50% unsure.

Handsongroup, can you give us a couple of menu items as a hint to those people unsure of the style?

Good idea Rob.

What you could do is a cheap market research job in the area you are thinking buying the resteraunt.

Work out who your target customers are ( young,old, middle aged, middle class etc etc etc ).

Target the area where you want to set up and decide the best time to catch your 'ideal customers'

Bring tiny portions of Georgian food with you to act as samples, along with a sample menu and photographs and simply ask as many as fit your profile what they think.

You will soon get an idea if the area is right, if people in your targets group are willing to try it, and whether Georgian food appeals to them at all.

If initially get a poor response try changing your area / target audience.

Your wife and you should be able to do all this quite cheaply, and it will save you from making an expensive mistake later.

I voted yes! I will try anything once, I think my husband would like this food. You seem to get all the best places down south, there's nothing like this up here (well not in my area). Good luck to you and when you expand, we want one up here!

I love Georgian cuisine a lot. We've got a lot of Georgian restaurants in Ukraine.

What you need is the PR agency that put Baltis on the map. At one time you couldn't watch local TV without some story or other about bloomin' balti curry, so much so that it became a family joke that we want the people who did the Balti account to work for SillyJokes.

I don't know how you make Georgian Food the most talked about cuisine in the UK but that has to be the way forward.

After all, what's a Balti got compared to the scrummy food on the site posted above?

The menu/restaurant is what we are looking to develop. My wife even knows the UK Georgian Consulate so he will be special guest! In addition to the menu, we are planning to bring in piano music played by a georgian pianist in the UK. Perhaps the waiting staff dress up as georgians and do a dance on Saturdays etc.

Pleased with the overall response. We did plan to ask people in the street but wanted to see what you business people thought first. We are now just debating the name! My wife likes 'Georgian Paradise' but I don't. The name I want is just one word and it does sound a bit italian. This end of England one name restaurants appear to be more 'upmarket'. Where I am planning to have the restaurant is in an expensive area with plenty of restaurants around and people who eat out everyday, literally!

Anyone know of a central website for searching for restaurants for lease, other than Daltons.

By the looks of the poll it seems that when it comes to our stomachs people will try anything once! Not one single no vote! * Must be encouraging news for you!

I'm not sure if the stereotypical Brit food culture thing with the old egg and chips scenario would stand up that well.

I would definitely try the food and would suggest a good PR campaign in the form of editorial in local press for initial publicity.

I like that one - can visualise it on a sign or menu in a nice 'classy' font.

Hi. I often have 'Georgia on my Mind' but I've never heard of a Georgian restaurant. Guess we're a touch out of date in the Midlands. Like others, I'll try anything once! Got married didn't I?
