Are back links in your product decription good? back links to home page.

Good for whom?

Having links in the actual description is a bit naff unless you are linking to related products. Can't actually see it helping your visitors to include a link back to the homepage when you already have one on the page. And the search engines couldn't care less.

yes they are.
You are associating the product to you home page.
if you write a comment and hyperlink the main keyterm for that item back to your home page its great kudos.

oh and linking back to a page from the same page is a waste of time.

Obvious difference of opinion here. Care to elaborate as to why having another link back from the product description to the home page is going to help as she already has two on every page?

its simply for creating an internal back link. But i agree with you if it already exists then its not required.
I will however stand by internal linking. It really does help.

if i write a paragraph on the benefits of internal linking for search engine optimisation on a page that deals with internal linking, I would then hyper link the term search engine optimisation to my home page as I have done with in this body of text.
Google then reads this paragraph and then associates the terms used to my home page.
if you look at the top pages in google. i would say a extremely high percentage use this technique.

I agree that internal linking is good but this technique only works if you want to increase the importance of the homepage. In this instance it's more important for the products to rank well so the links should be to other products not the homepage.

Can you give an example of a top page in google that uses this technique 'cos I'm being a bit slow and can't find any.

Have i over done it should i not put backlinks in the product description then? internal links are great so far i have had so many vistors! its great.

I got told on this forum to get as many internal links going to your homepage as possible with words you want to target?

Internal linking flows link juice to the pages you want to promote and rank highest for the specific terms. I doubt this is your homepage and would assume that it is your most profitable page/product.

Why do you want Google to think your homeapage is the most important? In any case, the links in your description will probably be ignored by Google since you already have links to the homepage.

The increase in visitor numbers has nothing to do with your new links, it's more likely to be people from this forum having a look at the site.

I agree with you all that internal linking is good. However my own view on internal linking is really just to keep the spiders traveling through the site for new updates.

Obviously I would recommend making the internal link keyword rich.

god its so confusing, no as soon as i linked bee costumes to my homepage i had 20 hits for that word on search engines.

I have been told on here to link what you can to your homepage all your keywords in your content and that what im doing, its getting very frustraing spenind days doing something that we have been told to do and then finding out its wrong, i worte the same message on 3 seo forums and they have all said what a great job ive done.

Im very confused now x

When you add a link to a webpage, the search engine robot will follow that link to see where it goes. If it decides that the link is relevant it will pass some link juice to the target page. The source page gains nothing from the transactoin. The fact that you got 20 hits from the search engines for bee costumes because you added the link is irrelevant despite what you think.

I've just searched google for 'bee costumes' and can't see your page anywhere so where did these 'hits' come from?

Why? Not saying you are wrong it's just that I'd have thought for an ecommerce site that the products were more important.

In the example page given the anchor text 'bee costumes' has no relevance to the home page so how is this helping?

I am only doing what the people are telling me to do. they said that you need to get as much links as possible that you want to target to yourhomepage, i tryed not doing that and linking to other pages however i got told this was all wrong!

and so i have spent the last 2 days doing what they have said, everything i seem to do is wrong : (

Forget all about the links! Your site is already indexed and a few extra internal links isn't going to make any difference. As has been said a number of times if you want to improve your ranking you need to work on your existing content and try to build links from related websites.

There are no tricks, no magic bullet that is going to help you. Rather than fiddle with the site to increase your ranking or 'hits' try to improve your conversion rate as this is what's going to make you money. Don't worry about how people found your site, concentrate on why they left without buying anything.

Stop getting into a tizzy :p

You just need to spend time structuring your pages.
The idea is that when google reads A page you can direct it to other pages and collate information (which is what google essentially does) and associate it to your home page and in turn you are telling Google to come to your home page to find information on costumes fancy dress bumble bee tutu..... etc.

Yes i have been gettintg Backlinks i do that all day long, When i wrote on here that i was getting backlinks from other sites exchange linking i was told that was wrong.

Then i had people messaging me asking for if they can have my site on theres without putting there on mine, then i got told that was wrong

submitted to forums = wrong

directory = wrong

Then putting links going back to my homepage as this will count as a backlink = wrong

I really as trying my best but am thinking serisley about giving up, i have for a while as everything on my site seems to be wrong and im tired of sitting at my computer trying to get things rioght and then find ihave spent 11 hours aday doing the wrong things : (

You have to know the difference between wrong and beneficial.:mad:

Directory submission = not wrong = not held in as high regard as used to be
submitting to forums = not wrong = now most forums use no follows so benefit has faded but you can till get some good linking from certain ones. (ukbusinessforum is good example)

Backlinking to home page = I challenge anyone to tell me that this is wrong. And if you are an SEO you should quit. Backlinks internal and external can only help so long as they are done correctly.

You are doing well I hope when you on page one you will remember who said what.

There is nothing wrong with getting all those backilinks, it's just that they aren't likely to help much.

It has been suggested that you need to work on your product decriptions. Make them exciting, alluring, seductive. Make me want to buy the product. This is called copywriting and is a skill that you need to practice. Instead of trying to promote the whole site just work on a few products that don't sell too well and experiment.

But much more importantly - focus on those people who do visit your site. You need to analyse where they landed, what they did and where they left. Fix the site so less people leave and your chances of making money increase.

Yes, she needs to understand google analytics for that. But backlinks are to help get page one for search terms. You cant convert what doesn't land on the website.
With the back links that she has put in place she will eventually come up for bumble bee costume / bumble bee fancy dress.
still needs a few tweaks but sha has got the right idea

Add bumble bee as a term in your meta key words
Also add the word bee

This is the bit that has me really confused. The bumble bee costume page has a link back to the homepage with the anchor text 'bumble bee'. There is no link from the homepage back to the costume so link juice only passes one way. How does this link help ranking for the costume page? I know that the costume page links to the homepage which links through category pages back to the costume page but since this is just a circular link very little link juice will pass so how is the costume page benefitting?

Have a look at wikipedia. :cool:
No juice there
loads of juice all over the place. but all internal links. all on page one.

Oh and like i said needs tweaks.
Navigation should send to hat page from one of the others doesnt have to be home page
