Free none copyright music for websites?

A friend of mine writes instrumental music for a hobby. I wonder how much mileage there is in offering free incidental none copyright music for people to use on their websites, in exchange for backlinks and credits on the target sites. - Gina

Music on websites... Aaaaaaaarrrrrghhh!!!!!

Add music to a website that plays automatically and your potential customers will leave in droves.

Hi crewgirl

I don't know if this helps, but I run a small arranger keyboard forum, (see sig.) where we upload original compositions and covers that have been produced solely on our keyboards. One of the members has started a site providing music, (any genre), for dance classes and is offering payment for any tune that gets downloaded, whether it's original or a cover. (He has the necessary industry permissions to offer this service).

I tend to agree with Fisicx as far as providing music for websites is concerned. I find it a big turn-off. However, I'm sure many people do enjoy hearing music on visiting a site, so I wish your friend luck in this respect.

Paul

Edit: Here's the link to the member's dance class details: http://www.thelonearrangers.com/intr...roduction.html

Unless your website is concerned with music then it's really not a good idea to have it as a feature. In fact, even if your website is about music then it's a really bad idea - let the visitor decide if they want to listen to something, don't foist it on them and place a tiny little on/off button in the bottom corner of the page!

Music slows down the page loading and as you do not know the personal tastes of each visitor it is more likely to annoy than please them. They've come to read about you, not be embarrassed when the speakers suddenly erupt. Which, if you're in the middle of the office or in a quiet space, will be a big black mark against your site.

It's really a big no-no.

Hi Paul, thanks for that. I tend to agree that - for me personally - music on a website would be irritating, I do think that there is a place for it though. It would have to be appropriate for the clientele, and none intrusive. I think it may, for some people, enhance the experience of visiting certain sites. - Gina
