Magento hosting

I use 1and1 for a couple of static sites and my emails.

Looks a bit tricky to install magento on thier servers:

Has anyone had experience of how quick it is once it is installed?

I am tempted to use 1and1, just because i am paying for it already but ifs it hard to work with and not great for magento then I will purchase a new hosting package with a magento specialist.

Not really true. Magento works 'best' on servers configured for Magento. Php 5 is the minimum requirement. And more importantly if you have never used it before YOU WILL have issues as it is not the easiest product to get to grips with so it is important you have a host that knows the common issues and how to solve them or you are likley to spend the rest of your life in an endless support queue :)

installed and tested it a few times, never had any issues as of yet, tbh not made any live sites so would be interested to hear what the common issues are.

I am about to design about 10 of them over the next year or so, although they will all be going on a dedicated server, so i can customise it to how i want.

I would also avoid 1&1 once had a few dealings with them with different companies I have worked for and the support was something out of this world (in fact it was on a different planet I think)

Magento works perfectly on all our cpanel shared servers. We host few magento websites on our servers. You can check our cPanel hosting plans at http://www.eukhost.com/cpanel-web-hosting.php

I host my Magento websites with United Hosting, based in the UK, and have been very pleased with both the performance of the servers and the support provided.

We run a busy online Jewellery store and host our magento site with magento-ecommerce-hosting.co.uk. We were with One and One to start with but quickly learnt you get what you pay for because a number of features (automated emails, additional stores etc) just wouldn't work. Good luck.

its still a work in progress and is based upon other magento check scripts but with some extra features we have found useful.

Its a false economy to go for the cheapest hosting when it comes to Magento.

On the other hand you don't have to pay a fortune to get decent Magento hosting.

£17 per year though sounds suspiciously low to host ANY site never mind magento, that is unless of course you aren't expecting many visitors in which case its fine ;)

Agree with edmondscommerce.

Focusing just on the hardware side of things you really do not want to skimp when it comes to hosting your Magento powered shop. We generally recommend an entry-level (albiet very optimised) Virtual Private Server / VPS as the very minimum.

That said, happy to be proven wrong :) - Anyone hosting their live Magento website on a £17 (or less) web hosting plan? Interested to see performance.

As a software developer, I would recommend paying close attention to the exact minimum PHP version system requirement, which according to the Magento site is currently PHP v5.2.13 for the latest version of Magento.

If the Magento software developers are stipulating v5.2.13 minimum then there is probably a good reason for this. A good proportion of Magento might run on an earlier PHP version, but that doesn't mean that 100% of the Magento code will run on an earlier PHP version.

Just for clarification, the .13 in the version number is thirteen not one three or one point three, so if you have say PHP v5.2.9 then that is an earlier/older version than PHP v5.2.13 and as such it doesn't meet the minimum system requirements.

To play it safe, and to minimise risk and headaches, I would recommend that you check with the hosting company what is the exact hosting configuration, including the exact PHP version number, to see if the hosting configuration matches or is better than the Magento minimum system requirements.

Earlier versions of Magento might have had less strict system requirements, including earlier versions of PHP, so technically a host might be correct in saying that it supports Magento, as in an older version of Magento, though it might not fully support the latest version of Magento.
