Hi everyone,

I was pointed here by somebody who told me that I would be able to find valuable business information and a wealth of other people running their own businesses, so I thought I'd introduce myself and my website www.myfirstbabygro.co.uk :)

I have been a Stay-at-home-Mama for about 5 years now, and have been crafting all kinds of things in my spare time for this, that and the other. After some prodding by my family and friends I decided to get myself a website to promote my little hobby.

I didn't know whether to post here or not but I saw Romperstomper had a line in baby clothes (which are really neat btw!) so thought I'd register myself!

I look forward to joining in on the forum, ciao!

Hi Nicky, some of your designs are great, the monkey just made me smile :) Your website is nice and bright and really fits in with your designs. One hint though, dump the opening screen where the user has to click the logo to enter the site, that really hurts your search engine ranking and if you want to sell loads you need to be liked by search engines :D

Love the site!!! I've saved it in my favourites. Its a great and welcoming format and very nicely laid out. Congrats and good luck with it all.

Epiphany - Interesting about the front page business, how does that affect search engine ranking?

I am really new to this whole internet thing so any advice is truly welcomed, thank you ;)

OK Nicky you want the friendly none techy version :D Well here it is!

You want your home page to be liked by the lovely Google, if Google likes your home page it will tell all it's friends and you will make ++£.


Google likes home pages that:

have lots of other websites linking to the home page (add your links to directories and sites that have similar content i.e. baby sites)

have cool content with lots of words on the site that people type into Google. i.e. if someone types in pink baby top into Google and a page of your website has this term in it 5 times then it makes that page more likely to appear in the results for that search.

Now Google likes lots of other stuff but I wont bore you with that because it gets away from your issue.

basically over time people will add links to your site from their site, they will most likely add a link to

http://www.myfirstbabygro.co.uk/

now Google likes this so it starts to add some significance to this page, BUT there is not content to this page so Google takes some points away from this page. The opposite happens with your main page, Google says http://www.myfirstbabygro.co.uk/home.htm yeh this has content, but BOOO it has not links pointing too it.

I hope you liked my explanation, it's 1am my mind is fried :D

Ultimately you have to ask yourself what does that Page do? And in my opinion it does nothing :)

Ephiphany - Thank you for all the information, I have been really busy and haven't made any changes as yet though. It's very i nteresting how these things work, you see I tried searching for myself on Google under relevant searches like "embroidered babygro", "hand embroidered onesie" etc etc and found that my page or links to my page were within the first five Google pages, and on some I had several on the first search page.

I don't know how I got to be up there at the front, I just put the meta tags I thought were relevant in and that was all. I will look at making some changes this week to enhance my site!

You really need to be at least on the second page and for a good response, the first to be found on search engines. Few look past the first page before typing a different phrase.

The reason you have found your site for the phrases above is likely to be that these are so specific that few people, if any, would use them in real life. Therefore, although the search may return thousands of pages, few if any will be actively competing to be top for these phrases.

You need to target phrases that will be commonly used, but not too competitive. Perhaps something like 'babygros uk' 'buy onesies online' or 'baby clothes uk' are the kind of phrases you should be targetting.
