Black and white hat seo for blog.

would setting up a wordpress blog on a subdomain and then linking various keywords from the blog to my main domain have any effect on my rankings for those words?...and would it be seen as black hat?

Im trying to up the ranking of my computer maintenance / building site and was thinking of setting up a blog of computer related help, downloads, reviews etc to help boost the ranking of my main site.

It is certainly not black hat unless all you are planning to simply add a massive list of keyword rich links on the blog back to your main site. This is spam and is also pretty pointless, as it is a subdomain it will not have much impact.

What you would be better doing is using it as a true blog to build relevant, informative content which, if written in the write manner, would generate natural links and search engine traffic anyway. these natural links are far more valuable than any form of spam links and the blog will add extra value to your website.

And my mate Dave sells hooky copies of windows down the market but he's no hero of mine.

With respect, selling hooky copies of windows is illegal, black hat seo isn't, so they can hardly be compared can they? And who mentioned 'hero'? Certainly not me!

The question was 'why would anyone want to use black hat methods?' I simply gave the reasopn why people like oilman and just about every prn store on the web uses black hat methods. The answer is because they make a LOT of money from it.

If you read my answer you will see I did not hold todd up as a hero, in fact I did not pass ANY judgement, i simply answered the question.

I am a white hat by the way ;)

There is sometimes a need to use black hat as in the case when we were asked to sell world cup cricket tickets 2 weeks before the match.:|

As said there is nothing illegal about black hat ,just another resource in a good SEO's toolbox.:)
