Advice on Insurance Please

I am starting up as a sole trader working from home. I will be making and repairing computers, as well as doing upgrades and selling accessories. This work will sometimes be done on the customers premises, but will also be carried out at my home. My question is, what type of insurance will I require for this type of work.Thanks

There is some compulsory insurance if you have employees. Personally I would look at product liability / public liability in case something you fix blows up and takes the user with it but I am not an expert, seek further advice.

Hi,
Make sure your mortgage lender at home knows you doing a business at home and the council, you may need planning and working from home could class your home as commercial. (voids home insurance). Insurances don't like to pay out if they can squirm out of it, so make sure your back is covered. Make sure your car is commercial insurance too, private insurance will not cover your business tools etc. if stolen.

Hi cyberdog,

Currently theres a big pink advert down the right of the screen (at 7th Aug 2005) that links to Hiscox insurance services. We use them and they are good - they also have an online quote script that I think includes your business!

From personal experience, your biggest hike in costs will come IF you have to cover for customers visiting you at your house. If they trip over in your entrance, you are really in for it if you do not have cover.
