I am thinking about selling my shop items on line.I live in Scotland,near Edinburgh.Can you suggest anyone who can help me with this please i have a very very low budget of around 150 pounds but it probably won,t be enough.Would be grateful of any advise.Thanks

Hi Georgina,

One of the choices available to you is to use a hosted service. This is similar to renting an office; you pay an initial set-up cost of £39.95 and a low monthly subscription to rent your online shop. The subscription also includes a host of inclusive services such as support and advice on all aspects of getting up and running.

I'm putting this choice first because this is the type of Ecommerce service we provide to over 400 shop owners including a fair few forum members

Alternatively, if you prefer that face to face contact with a local business you can search Google for 'web designers in edinburgh', look for a website that has a good portfolio page full of live examples of recent work.

You should be able to find a web designer who can configure an open source shop software within your budget.

I personally don't like monthly paid for shops. Personal choice, nothing against them personally, just would never use them.

However in your case with such a low budget a hosted option as mentioned above would probably be the best option for you. I can't give you recommendations so you will have to do the legwork yourself for that.

Some may mention oscommerce, but by the sound of it you are not technically minded (no offence meant if you are technically minded) so building your own will be a problem.

You could look at a designer, but getting a decent one for that price would be hard.

Go with a monthly option where they have a number of templates for you to play about with.

I've just realised I've recommended a hosted monthly ecommerce service, time for an early night methinks.

£150 will get you less than a day's time with any decent development company.

Open source is a good way to begin for free, it also depends on the type of host you have if they do ave cPanel where you use fantastico to install scripts that will make life easy... However easy this is, for a newbie all I have said above will be jargons

except someone is willing to help set you up

But that leaves you with marketing, the site is just the beginning... what do you do to get the clients in?

So based on your budget, I would say you should opt for using eBay for now.. You already have a ready market, easy platform to use and you're ready to go... This is the first step I'll take.

When you see that you are selling enough to be able to afford your own shop, then you can start looking for a good developer to help you.

£150 will get you 5 months hosted shop with us.
Rackspace hosted, easy to use and search engine friendly.
Happy to go that extra too and help you if you haven't done this before and need advice / help.

Thanks for pointing out my gramatical error Dave.
What I really meant was that £150 will get you 1 Shop Maker shopping web site hosted on our Rackspace servers for 5 months as our monthly cost is £29.99

but you have to think about traffic !
You need visitors that buy!
