    Hi everyone,

    Ive been playing Guitar now for about 3 or 4 years and have tried to get into a Band. The only problem is that most of the Band's near my area only play heavy metal and have singers that scream and shout instead of sing. I want to be in a Band thats actaully plays music! After relising there is no chance of finding a band like that ive decided to go solo and play some covers in pubs and clubs. I will be playing some songs from the past and present. Here is a live recording of me http://www.rocklinks.co.uk/track1.mp3 playing Apache by The Shadows, it was recorded on a Tape recorder so aint the best qaulity recording infact its terrible quality but you can still hear what im playing. Please Answer my poll and tell me what you think of my Guitar playing, feedback would be very much appreciated.

    The recording is actually appalling I'm afraid so it is not very easy to check your timing correctly, or the bleeding between the cords. However, I can tell you are on the right track (ho ho) at the very least.
    I love the guitar myself since I was in my mothers womb, she had a friend who played the guitar and he used to play it to me/her whilst I was unborn and very young. Amazing that it has stuck with me since then. The problem is I cant play and wish I could.

    :D Yeah, the recording's shocking....but not bad - you certainly know which end is up on a guitar!

    Do you write any stuff of your own? And which part of the country is that then, where they only have rock groups? Maybe you haven't been looking hard enough?

    Hi RockLinks,

    Your playing doesn't sound too bad, just the recording. The volume of the backing track is a bit too loud(I assume it is a backing track and not a band) Do you practise with anyone else? Your playing will come on in leaps and bounds if you can 'play' with another guitarist, mine did.

    A couple of other songs you could try that will help you create a more 'moody' feel are Samba Pa Ti and Europa, both by Carlos Santana. I recommend you have a listen and then play them, they are ideal numbers for lead guitar...you'll have no problem with them.

    Graig Hi. I haven't listened to your music yet, but from the comments I gather the quality isn't up to much. I was on the road for many years and have played support to one or two, lets just say 'Names' so I'm a bit of an old hand at the game.
    If I may give you a couple of pointers, some obvious and other perhaps not so. Firstly there are a lot of acts chasing very few live venues, and the competition is very fierce. The usual way for an unknown to get work is to approach the proprietor of a live gig. The first question he will ask is have you got a demo CD, yes, a CD not a tape. Your competition will have already been in a studio and mastered one for duplication, so if your demo isn't absolutely spot on quality you won't get the work, simple as that.

    Audiences are a a little more critical these days. gone are the times of the working mans club circuit where regular work and a living could be made with the only criteria being 'Play something we know' and by 10.30 it didn't matter anyway because they were all drunk or staggering away for the curry and chips down the road.
    Nowdays to be a solo act you have to be good and I mean bloody good. Most successful solo acts I know did it the other way round, they gained experience in bands first and then went solo.

    Right now tribute bands are getting a good share of the market and it may be worth you looking into that instead. With the right tribute band the singer will have to conform and give a true and faithful performance of the numbers and will not scream and shout as that would defeat the whole object if you catch my drift. Choose what type on music you like and put an ad in the local rag wanting to join or even form your own tribute band.
