Why learn on an electric guitar and not an acoustic one? I'd recommend an acoustic to learn on then when they are ready they can move over to electric.

For an 8 year old I'd make sure that the neck wasn't too wide.

A solid electric guitar may be too heavy for an 8 year old to hold, so if you are getting one then try them out. Make sure they can reach the nut end of the neck.......you can get shorter guitars if this is a problem.

I'd go to a good music shop and ask them if they have any good 2nd hand guitars. You'll get a much better guitar for the money than a new cheaply made one.

Yes the Squirers are good and they are quite light which is good for a kid.

However make sure they can stretch between three or four frets otherwise they won't be able to play much. A kid at 8 may need a 3/4 length guitar or even a 1/2 length one. The frets will be closer together and the neck will be shorter.

Here's a 3/4 length one......

Here's one for a girl......

I wouldn't pay a lot of money now as in three or four years time they will probably be big enough to move up to a full sized guitar.

Beachcomber

Fender Squire / Epiphone / Aria etc are all good.

Don't get a cheap 'package' models a la ebay - it will be useless to learn on.

Elecric is best - easier to play than an acoustic, thinner neck and you can buy a practice amp with headphones so you don't have to listen!

Best thing to do is visit a local shop - get him to try a fewe out, talk to the fella there and get some good advice.

(then jot down the make / model and find it 20% cheaper online :D)

Be warned though - if at any time he shows signs of becoming the next James Blunt you must destroy the guitar immediatly and forbid him from playing again for the good of mankind.

Hey thanks for the advice everyone. I didn't think about the whole headphones point, brilliant idea ! School are sorting out some guitar lessons as well and even my husband is thinking of having some lessons at the same time (lol). He thinks he is still Eddie Van Halen or Dave Lee Roth.....though I do draw the line at throwing our portable TV out our bedroom window :):)
