Just pick up the phone and do it!
A script might give you confidence, as might some features and benefits to offer.
If you're calling new customers, the worst possible outcome is that they are still not a customer (but at least they have heard of you)l if you are calling existing customers you can chat about the weather as long as you remember to ask for an order (or whatever).
My experience is that once people realise you are the business owner, and aren't about to ask for credit card details, they will open up.

- Just let them talk.
- Keep calm: nervousness shows in your voice.
- Emphasie the benefits to them of buying your product.
- Have a conversation. Don't read a script.

right a few notes down, so you say everything you want do and know where you are heading.
You can rehearse it 100000 times in your head before you pick the phone up, but you can forget a lot once on the phone.

Be calm, be confident, be honest and remember theres two in the selling conversation - you and the potential customer. If any problems prevent them from buying see if you can overcome them.
If you lie about it being a sales call, lie about the product, try to steam roller the customer, dont let the customer get a word in or dont listen to the customer your success rate will be 1 in 100.
If you do it properly it'll be 1 in 10.

Thats because theres a culture of corruption at many telesales businesses where they believe to get a sale they have to do the customer over.
Its also why they end up with a high staff turnover as the corrupt method doesnt work.

What about door to door sales? Should it always be best practice to call the business, or just go there?

60% of people in telephone sales are awful. Thats the truth. People, consumers and businesses, constantly moan about it. So its best to know if you are a bit rough around the edges or wet behind the ears... that there are many worse out there than you, so its not personal upon your performance but as a whole for telephone sales.
Once you built up the confidence (probably the most important factor) you will soon get good at it.
