I'm having problems setting up RDC on a Windows XP machine (I've only ever used it on Win 2k servers before).

The problem I'm getting is that whenever I try to RDC into the computer, it wants to log-off the person currently logged on and sat at the PC.

What I need to be able to do is login to the computer as a different user via RDC and simply "work in the background".

If it makes any difference, Novell Netware is installed and used on the computer to connect to the Novell server.

Is this a limitation of the XP version of RDC or is there a setting I need to change?

you can only have 1 person logged in at a time, however there is a registry hack to get round this issue.

did a quick google and found this, i did do it a few back but i cant remember the specific website:

there might be better easier options now

Alternative solutions are metaframe or citrix but they do cost a bit of money I'm affraid.

you could maybe try logmein as a free alternative, depending on your requirements

At the moment, VNC is used, but the computer that's being VNC'd into will be used more regularly, and therefore, we need the person dialing in remotely to work "in the background" - ie not tieing up the computer.

Hi,

The only way to do this is with the hack detailed above, it's not supported or recomended though.

Cheers

If you have server 2003 then you can get the updated termsvr.dll that the hack is on about and use that.

It just makes the machine run in administration mode just like you would get on Server 2003.

You probably know, but you can't use RD from an XP pro machine to an XP home machine, I believe you can do it the other way round.

XP home will not accept an incoming RD connection.

try xpunlimited, the trial version allows 2 consecutive logons on an xp box if I remember correctly. Has a host of other features too which may or may not be of interest.

Thanks I'll give this a go next week when I'm in front of the machine - I don't fancy doing this hack remotely :)

@estwig - I should have been clearer initially, it's Windows XP Pro.

I've never actually used XP Home...!
