I'm wondering what anchor text is? I have heard of it and believe it to be important, but not entirely sure what it is?

I am doing a lot of blog commenting at the moment as I'm told it will help backlinks. How (if at all) do I get my anchor text in the blog comment?

Thanks for any help. Sorry if the question is a bit stupid.

Many thanks

anchor text is link text on some web site that points to other web site.

Anchor text is the actual text that you click on for a link, the link may be in a sentence and the most obvious example is

"To see some information click here (http://www.iuijgjhg.com)."

Dont click it it wont go anywhere but in this example the anchor text is "click here", when setting up links to your site you need to use anchor text that is relevant to the page that is being linked to. You also want the page that you are linking from to be relevant as well, more relevance = better quality link and more seo benefit.

Many blogs are nofollow and won't pass any search engine ranking benefit

Agree, blog commenting won't help your ranking but may bring in some useful traffic if your site is related to the blog post.

Much better! Anchor text is so, so important. We often link to our dog collars (http://www.prettypawsaccessories.co.uk/dog-collars-9-c.asp) page using the correct anchor text to good effect. ;) (We rank top 5 for Dog Collars)

Me personally? I did it myself and have taken on a few "clients" in the past to do theirs to but I'm no pro. It's just something I enjoy doing.
