View Full Version : Advertising - 'illegal' banners etc

Need to advertise my website more - http://www.cupras4less.co.uk.

We're a car broker and specialise in more sportier cars rather than your run-of-the-mill runabout.

Very limited budget at the moment so was considering getting a banner made - £100 max - and hanging it on a pedestrian/road separation railing near to a local race-track. Advantage of this would be that apart from the banner itself, it's free and can be re-used, and also, in the right location, could attract a lot of business.

However, how illegal is this?? Just worried that if i put it up, the police or council may come and remove it and either prosecute me or dispose of the banner. Both would be bad!

Also, laminated signs on traffice lights and lamp-posts (similar to the ones you see - earn £500 licking stamps, work from home etc etc) - what you guys think?? Good or bad??

Need to get hits as my prices on some cars really are the lowest in the UK as far as I can find!

Any replies much appreciated.

Regards,

Simon

Some caring-citizen will report your abuse of public property very quickly and you will have to take it down.

On the other hand, if you can get someone to agree to display the sign on their own property that happens to be clearly visible then you have no problems.

I remember a few years ago when I was living in Caterham considerable public fuss about the large hoardings at the new site of the Ann Summers offices. Personally, neither my wife nor my then under 10 children were offended by the images used but many people were but because the signs were on private property and did not break any laws (decency, honesty, hazard, etc.) there was nothing that could be done about it.

There's a thought!

Hmm - must go location hunting!

What if it's displayed, for example, on a railing - privately owned - but hanging onto the public side of the railing. Is this ok or not??

IANAL. I suspect it depends. I suspect that the outside of railings are inside of the property boundary in many cases though.

Any idea on what to suggest for money??

I've just driven past a house that has a two massive trees in the garden, on a main road, if I could put the banner hanging from both trees - would be great.

Problem would be having to knock at somebody's door and ask and then they hit you back with that classic line "what's in it for me??".

What do you suggest - £10 per week, £150 per week???

£10 for having some fool climb your trees twice in one week is surely worth it for somebody?? Doesn't do them any harn does it? May be the start of something - if 51 other people decide they want a weeks worth, it's a nice 'tax-free' £520 a year! I mean - how would you tell the tax man this???!
