View Full Version : Payments By BACS/Bank Transfer

We often have customers who want things delivered to a different address to the card holders billing address. We've been stung in the past with large charge backs and we're very nervous about doing this anymore but there a very valid reasons why we need to do it and we don't want to loose business by refusing.

If we ask people to pay by BACS then is it possible for them to claim the money back from us at a later date? Is there much fraud with BACS payments? Does anyone else use this payment method for large transactions?

Thanks

You need to be careful with BACS payments as they can be recalled the same day that they arrive into the account, so don't rely on the payment and release the goods the same day.

To the best of my knowledge I think it would be difficult for them to be recalled after that time period. The only situation I could think of would be if their internet security details had been compromised, but would like to think that either the bank or account holder would be liable (depending upon if they kept their details secure). Best to check on this situation.

Thanks Mattonella, nice site btw

Same industry as us.

I've asked the banks but they're like trained monkeys, trying to find someone who actually knows about this kind of thing is impossible.

We were taken for a large amount of money recently so once bitten twice shy n all.

Does anyone know if BACS can be reclaimed after the transaction if someones bank account has been accessed fraudulently

Thanks, am getting happy with the basic site now, just need to add more to it.

Had a look at your site, you've got some nice looking stuff on there. Are you heading down to Excel in May?

I think so. Probably looking for more UK based suppliers and the Spanish and Italians are getting way to expensive with the exchange rate so bad.

I recently received a BACS payment for over £2000 from a customer in China. I checked with my bank (a reliable source) as to whether this could ever be withdrawn and was assured that it could not be touched without my permission.

We have the same concern as regards the risk of card charge-backs and read a post somewhere (can't remember where) that suggested a list of steps that can be taken to reduce risk. The key one is to call the person whose card it is (rather than the contact at the delivery address) and confirm the purchase. The other one which saved me a few months ago was to call the Fraud Dept of the card issuer and get them to check with the owner of the card. As long as you go direct to the Fraud Dept them this can be a surprsingly (took me 5 minutes) quick, easy and safe check.

Hope this helps.
