Thinking of something rather important here - how would you make your money?

So are you a webdesigner / database specialist (programmer used to this sort of thing) / ...? Affiliate adverts can make a lot of money, if your website has a lot of on-subject traffic. If you provide a forum for people to chat about their vehicles, you can probably get a fair few customers. Consider alternatives to exclusively advertising affiliates though, such as "Paid" adverts for peoples vehivles, which would be more prominent, on the front page, etc.

Sites like that with a forum are overtaking a lot of the origional, business only websites. Get in there whilst the goings good! If you work hard, learn from your mistakes and don't mind admitting when you need help, I'm sure you can make a million ;) (or something). Really though, it does sound like a worthwhile venture.

Mainly PHP/MySQL development. I sometimes do some webdesign / SEO, and occasionaly build whole business / charity websites, but mainly focus on various sorts of dynamic websites built from PHP.

I can't speak much on this particular subject (knowing nothing about the intricacies of vehicular sales :)), but if you think you can do it well, have a good plan for advertising, etc, then why not just give it a go? It wouldn't be a major investment for a site like this (just some free time and hosting costs), and if done well could really work for you. Whilst seeking other peoples opinions is a good idea, remember its your decision, and only you really know exactly what you have in mind.

Hi Huzzi,
My thoughts exactly, the costs to start this up initially will be very low and effectively just your time and hosting. However, I would set aside at least a few hundred quid minimum for some initial online marketing such as banners and ppc.

Out of interest (and sorry if it's off topic), how much does ad space sell for? I guess it depends on the site and the traffic but I'm interested in a rough idea.
