i am doing a project for my university course about the economy and i wondered if anyone could tell me how a government would get the country out of a recession. i am doing my project on the Great Depression in the 20's and 30's and the government in america at that time increased public spending and reduced taxes. would the government do this nowadays.

From one ex-student to another I offer the following. You may well get some replies to this post, but in general, people do not tend to provide students with their opinions on such matters, especially when this is your first post. In addition, you are walking a very fine line if you intend to use someones opinion from a foum as an academic reference. I wish you success with your work but be careful what you use as reference and research.

All I will say is what do you think the government has been doing since the 09/11 crisis???

Why do we have such a large budget deficit at the moment?

Of course, it all depends on the government. If its the German government, for example, they will use any money they do have to fund industry, and reduce regulations that hamper their growth. If its our (the British) government, it'll buy new roadsigns. Try reading this, in case it helps;
