Is anyone else going to be registering? I have had an email telling me that I can do so from 3pm today but wondered if anyone could point out the benefits?

Many thanks

What benefits?

All you can do is display your contact details:

"The owners of .tel domains will not be able to upload and maintain web pages, as they can for other top-level domains (TLDs) – they will only be able to store contact details such as names, telephone numbers, web and email addresses."

Gosh wow!

And it's only $375 for 3 years.

Are we not impressed then fisicx? ;)

I had no idea as to the cost either - amazing!

Are there any security risks though if someone else grabs out .tel extension? Just wondering.

the .tel domain will be made available so you can use a phone to dial the contact details for example you would dial sky.tel to phone the number listed in the domain records.

Also the high price is for landrush registration ie allow companys to buy the domain before they get to the public. I have one on preorder that costs £14.99, its more for family purposes but will hopefully be usefull in a few years time.

Looking at the various reports and articles, it seems that the .tel domains will collectively form an online telephone directory. There is only one company authorised to use .tel so you use their portal to update your details.

So claireb.tel would bring up this webpage with all your contact details. If you think that this will be an advantage then go ahead and register but I'd rather people went to fisicx.com than fisicx.tel.

I think this is a big security issue, it will be so easy to set up a script to harvest everybody's email addresses: http://telnic.tel/
