Hi Guys

this really is just general interest, but i would be keen to hear from anyones input.

Years ago, and sometimes these days you here about these one man bands that build a national style website, almost on peanuts and develop it over a number if years, sell advertising space to get them by and then some large company comes and makes them a large offer to sell.

I am certainly no expert when it comes to websites, but i know nothing is easy money!! If you was starting out building a national website, at what point would companies take you seriously regarding advertising space, what sort of reports would you need to provide? Where would you find a average and correct price to rent space for etc??

At what point would be a good tiem to approach an investor for a large investment for national advertising to excel it forward??

Then once its fully established and a success, would you need to approach other companies offering to sell the whole site? Would companies approach you?? Would you have to make people aware that you may sell?? How would some put a price on a website??

Sorry i know this might make me sound like a mad man, just generally interested in this style of business. Anyone had any success stories??

The time a website is ready for being bought is when the website is generating phenomenal revenue (not likely as the website would be too small) or phenomenal spread something like facebook, or phenomenal amount of visitors within your niche.

These, apart from the first example would be reasons for an investor or company to step in an buy you out.

Most of the one man bands, were anything but. youtube.co.uk start by two geeks in a garage, but I think you will find they had all worked for paypal prior.

Most of the one man band cheap as chips websites, are actually completed/developed by highly skill web engineers, with a novel idea to a solution of a problem or a new idea for getting visitors, whether that is facebook or lastfm.

And even with facebook they are still trying to work out how to make money from it, so the purchase was purely speculative..

That is what it comes down to in the end, finding someone willing to believe and take a punt!!

Finally the people who started these websites, were never looking to 'the out' until the interest starting to appear on the horizon. They concentrated on making the website/product work for them.
