Has anyone noticed that new domain names only take a few hours to be active. ? last year it took 48 hours ..

It depends on how often the domain registering company update the serving DNS servers, and .uk domains are usually a lot quicker than .com

Hi there are a few settings on the hosting server that can make a difference too - in some instances it is possible to move people across servers with no downtime or lag :) - this does involve some level of temporary reconfigoration in the server zone files but it is possible.

Yes we have found propagation has sped up in general - but still say up to 48 hrs to clients just in case (because it isn't within our control to speed up other IPS's DNS servers updating so quickly)

It also means that when it propagates quickly they are happier - if you advise a few hours to propagation they are likely to sit on their eror 404 page hitting refresh until the page appears - or calling you after 2 hours when it doesn't ;)
