This is a very broad subject but i'll try and be more specific.

I am just one in a massive list who has been made redundant. I was down my local job centre yesterday and there were people queuing up and apparantly it has been like that for weeks! They even have security guards in place.

I went for a job interview this morning and the company was interviewing over 20 people to fill just one position.

In your view, where are the jobs going to come from and what sector is going to be highly successful in the next few years. (I can retrain :D)

Look forward to hearing the replies.

People will have to make their own job.

I think for the next year or so it will be like that with large numbers of people applying for the same job.

If sterling continues to fall for a long time without bouncing back then surely we must see a resurgence in both British manufacturing and farming as we will become very competitive both from the point of view of price and available workforce?

But this will take a lot of doing both from entrepreneurs and the government who are unlikely to back it.

Sorry to hear about your redundancy and hope it leads to better things.

Sorry to hear about your present troubles. I thought you phrased your question in a positive manner, though. I wonder what sort of work you would like to do, if you could choose to do anything at all.

I think the growth, when it comes, will be from small businesses. I believe currently as many as 60 per cent of private sector jobs are in SMEs.

More worrying is that I keep coming across people who have in the past employed staff and who vow never again.

The picture that you paint is very reminiscent of what was happening in the late 1970's and early 1980's when I left school and Margaret Thatcher swept to power on the back of the now famous posters "Labour isn't working" with long queues shown outside job centres.

We came through it then and will do again but I think anyone who claims to have a crystal ball should be treated with caution. Which industries will emerge stronger is very difficult to predict. However as someone has already said with the pound on the slide imports will become more expensive making home goods look cheaper by comparison. It would be nice to see a resurgency in manufacturing but I wouldn't bet too much on that.

A lot of people (especially with a trade) are working away in places like Iraq, Dubai, China etc There all developing at an alarming rate and it seems they are paying good money too.

doom i tells ya..DOOOMMMMM

there are still something like 10,000 jobs to be created within the next 6 months you know..nationwide...plus we have a new homebase store opening here in whitby in a few weeks..taking on dozens of new staff!

aslong as they don't go under then we may start seeing an improvement in local finances.

I would say that the only way to guarantee not being made redundant in the current economic climate is to work for yourself, and also the type of business you have, if it is a service that you get many clients so you are not putting all your eggs in the one basket so if one client goes bankrupt you will still have more clients.

Saying that running your own business unless you really lucky you end up working more hours then if you have a job, some businesses work 70 hours + a week.
