Make sure you're on Google Local Business so that you appear on the map for your area.

Photographer in whatever town.
I always use "in" in the keywords as it makes a difference and a lot of people use it.

No the answer to the question but it's an interesting question because I was looking exactly at that topic not so long ago.
If you are a general photographer (doing portraits, weddings etc.) and go in the google directory under general photography then it will bring the google map up first but I don't know how you go about getting into the top 15 results which are shown first?
The problem is if you are a commercial photographer because you need to go in the directory under this category but then you don't come up on the map results.

We @BView (http://www.bview.co.uk) have an API which Ask (http://www.ask.co.uk) recently started using to display local search results. When we removed the requirement for the trigger term to include the article e.g. "bars in dundee" to "bars dundee" we saw about a 75% increase in traffic however quality goes down.
It is probably safer to add it than not though.
Also, try experimenting with outcode ranges e.g. target "SE1", "EC2A", etc as well as "London" as there are a significant number of people who use post code as a geo reference.

I've just done some work on my mothers photography site so I should have some interesting stuff for you. I did an hour or two and added the rest to my old mans "To do" list :)
The main phrases for her are "Photographer stoke on trent" & "Photographer staffordshire" but you also should look at adding "Wedding" & "Portrait" to the font of these phrases. You need to be listed on google local business thingy too - that's a must. Adwords is also a big deal because they are cheap if you are targeting a spacific area. If you do weddings for example it's a fantastic investment because the profit is so high and the compatition is so low. We spend £10 - £20 per month and get a couple booked per month through the site, plus portraits etc. In a big place like Brum you might want to list the districts also?
If you check out the link below you will see the site (Seagull Photography) listed 3 times in the window for "photographer stoke on trent" Once across the very top, once in the local results and 3rd in the natural result.

I've just been reading your post regarding search terms for photography.
You would search for 'Photographer' Town but some people may search for the plural Photographers Town as well.
If you offer a range of photography services - i would recommend setting up individual pages concentrating on Weddings Photography, Landscape Photography, Portrait Photography, Childrens Photography etc. Within the content on your page, i would use a good keyword weight and prominence of your area, photography type where possible the keyword phrase 'photographers' as well.
If you require further information on this - please do not hesitate to message me privately.

photographer plus the town but if I wanted a specific photographer like for weddings or commercial perhaps etc it would be wedding photographer plus town or commercial photographer plus town etc

Yes that is correct. It depends on the type of photography services you provide. If you require more help on this subject- please msg me privately as i do not mind giving you more assistance or a phone call.

I recently worked on a wedding photographer site and the top 2 were
'wedding photographer TownName'
'wedding photography TownName'
Use townname or region.

I live in Jersey, so I wouldn't specify town (just 'Jersey'), however, used to live in Portsmouth and would do:
"photographer portsmouth"
From experience, I'd expect to see people also try things like:
"photographer in portsmouth"
"photographers in portsmouth"
"portsmouth photographer"
You may also get town 'nicknames' (e.g. pompey), extra words creeping in (photography services, etc). Some people will even try postcodes ;)

I always use "in" in the keywords as it makes a difference and a lot of people use it.
Words like 'in', 'and', 'on' are called stop words and are filtered out of the results. Look top right in the serps and you will see that google doesn't include them.
However, having 'wedding and portrait photographer in sometown' is better for clickthroughs than 'photographer | sometown | wedding and portraits'
