View Full Version : Help! - Can't get PayPal site!
multilingual

OK, so this is strange (and somewhat annoying)
I can get every site on the planet apart from PayPal :|
We have a few computers in the office and none of them can access this stupid PayPal site and we need to process quite a few orders today with clients waiting.
Our friend, living only a few hundred metres away, can access it without any glitch, so the easiest thing would be to pop down and do the work there, but that doesn't solve the problem.
Been like this for 3 days now. I thought it was their fault until ten minutes ago
Any ideas?

Check your Firewall to see if they have for some odd reason blocked the site.
Firewalls can be found in routers and browsers or individual applications.
what happens when you type "paypal.com" in the browser?

Are you using a bookmark? Or a link in an email or from another website?

I switched the Firewall off and it still doesn't help.
I also cleared out all of the temporary internet files, history, etc and then rebooted the computer and typed the URL directly into the address bar.
Nothing works, on .co.uk or .com
it's a mistery :|

What happens in your browser, Is it blank, does it tell you you have a broken link, or page not found?
Also which browser(s) are you using?

Can you access using the IP address? Try 66.211.168.209 in the address bar.

Mooredale - It just times out and says page cannot be found. It's like going back to dial-up again.
Tried using the IP address at 66.211.168.209 but that does the same.
The nearest I came to opening the site was this morning when the PayPal home page (of sorts) was displaying but it was all broken up, as if it was pulling certain files down from their server but they couldn't be arranged on the screen properly. It was a right mess, plus the text was all over the place and was all in Times New Roman.
That's the closest I came. ;)

Here are a few things you can try.
Can you see www.paypal.co.uk (http://www.paypal.co.uk)?
Check that the upstream ISP / DNS server is issuing the correct IP.
You can find your DNS server by typing "ipconfig /all" at a dos prompt (look for ip addresses next to dns servers heading).
You can use this easy online tool to query most DNS servers, http://network-tools.com/nslook/
What ip do you get if you type "ping www.paypal.com" in a dos prompt?
BTW don't worry if pinging brings back a "Request timed out." as it seems they block ping even though http and https work fine.

Hi,
Don't really understand all that :)
DNS Server shows 192.168.2.1
Ping brings 66.211.168.82
Not sure what that means though ;)

Have you got NOD32 as your antivirus?
Or a mega FO version of symantec, of the industrial strength that they run on government computers?
Try ebay - do you get the same problem?

Basicly your using your router as a caching / pass-through DNS server (192.168.2.1), have your tried rebooting it also check in the config to see what DNS servers it is passing unknown DNS calls too?
That IP is for www.paypal.co.uk (http://www.paypal.co.uk), have your tried www.paypal.com (http://www.paypal.com)?
What results do you get if you type "tracert 66.211.168.82" at a dos prompt? (Tip, you can output the results to a text file by putting "tracert 66.211.168.82 > c:\tracert.txt")

Boxby,
We have AVG on all the office computers.
Ebay opens fine.

OK, rules out my theory. I had similar probs once and it was all related to that.
Is AVG really working, there are viruses out there that knock it out, but it still goes through the motions.

tracert on that IP runs for about 75 lines, with everything from line 14 saying 'request timed out'
Before that, the last line was 207.88.187.18
Does that help?:|

Here are some pointers I thought of:
- Ok can you tracert paypal.com as well? Do you get the same response.?
- Ring your isp it could be the problem with the router on 207.88.187.18
- Is it a wired or wireless connection. If you can, try and connect directly to the internet from your modem using a cable. Does it work now.
-Try Lavasoft.com with adaware free. It can come out with many more viruses to find.
-Download Hijackthis & post your results here.

Try START > RUN> type: cmd
In there type: route print
can you copy and paste that entire table to me?
(you may have to right click and go to "MARK" first for the selection thing to appear).

Just a thought, can you try using a proxy site connection?
I had an issue some time ago with Tiscali blocking me from my web development site and had a real job trying to prove it. I googled about and found a site that I could put my dev site's url into and connect via them. It proved that the issue was with the ISP.
Not suggesting you are being blocked on purpose.
