Hello to all,
I am brand new to this forum, but events in the past couple of days pushed me to seek outside opinions.

I have been in direct marketing for about a year and a half but was recently informed that a colleague of six months at the same level is being promoted over me.
The issues I face are that I have strong evidence to indicate that my colleague is too inexperienced to be considered for a higher level position and direct proof that her actions recently had a direct and dramatic affect on the business.
Because previously I had decided to keep quiet about her mistakes to the management team and help her learn from them so as not to 'rock the boat' would it be futile to bring these forward now that I know that she is being promoted and I am not?

Any thoughts or comments would be greatly appreciated.

MDR.

I would say that if I was a senior manager I would take your actions now as purely being solely to try to put your colleague down due to the fact that she had been promoted instead of you.

All you can really do is your own job to the best of your ability, leave her to make her own mistakes and should it be recognised then so be it.

Your only other action would be to ensure that you do not cover up and if you feel so strongly do not help her should she makes mistakes (this of course would impact on any personal relationship you may have with her)

If you feel really strongly about being overlooked for promotion then your final solution is to leave.

Thanks for the reply Alan.

This situation is difficult for me as I am very young and my profession is a tough one to break into without any previous experience or a degree.

I think I'm just going to have to decide what counts more, the opportunity with this one company, or my principles, in which case it's possible I could take my skills elsewhere, but then it would be starting from scratch again.

Thanks again - all other comments are welcome.

A similar thing happened to my brother - a teacher. Someone, who was not very good, got promoted over his head. She did such a bad job that she got "promoted" sideways after only 1 year. Guess, who is now head of department? ... My brother! So hang in there. If she's no good, it might come out sooner than you think.
