I keep calling the tax office (its nice they charge you for the call!) to ask for my ID to do my return online by end of Jan but everytime I call they advise its on its way. I have asked for it 3 times now and getting a bit worried about the deadline....what happens if I miss it due to not getting the ID ?

You'll get a penalty notice.

You can appeal if you think that you have reasonable excuse. When did you first ask for this ID? Bearing in mind that the return was probably issued in April, and you've known since October that you have to file online, if you only asked for it in the last couple of weeks you might find that the appeal is rejected on the grounds that you left things too late. Sorry if that's not what you want to hear.

For personal tax returns, the late filing penalty is the lower of £100 and the unpaid tax at 31st January. If you pay all the tax due by 31st January the penalty will be nil even if the return is late.

These doesn't apply to partnership returns.

From memory, the ID takes 10-14 days

Just make sure you have all the info too - and don't leave it until the last few days, their site gets hammered this month.

if you are self employed there is a fast track number to ring:

0845 915 4515

Note though that this is self employed - HMRC do seem to have a difficulty in issuing UTRs for directors who need to complete an SA (in my experience).

Any other accountants have this - any help / feedback on this please.

To help with your "reasonable excuse" if it does not arrive on time, I recommend you keeping a note of the number you rang, the name of the person you spoke to, the date and time.

Don't be sympathetic! When they start being competent and efficient, then maybe it's warranted.:p

What business of ours would last if we had a 6 week lead time on replying to letters, kept making monumental c**k-ups, losing sensitive data etc?

Glad you got it done in time :D

I def agree on the competance front, I don't think they would be in business if they operated like they do if they were a private company. I dread to think how many laptops on trains have they lost in the last 12 months !!
