How to do research?

Sorry title should read "How to do proper research?"

Not sure if this is the best place to post this.

I have a idea for a web based business, it is also a hobby. What is the best method of researching the idea to see if it's viable?

-see if you have competitors doing it already
- do a survey of possible interested customers
- crunch some figures, find out costs etc

well... i don't think is a simple answer is there....?
