This was asked in the Private Section of the forums, but I don't see why it can't be put here as well to help anyone looking for this information.

GS1UK are the UK registry for all things barcode and their site can be found here: http://www.gs1uk.org/

I haven't personally joined, but it appears to be a very pleasant and simple process - and not too expensive either!

Here's a grab from one of their pages:

This page takes new bar code users through the basic steps they must take to begin using bar codes.

Step 1: Get a GS1 UK Company Prefix (http://www.gs1uk.org/about/Implementation_Guide.asp#1)
Step 2: Assign Numbers (http://www.gs1uk.org/about/Implementation_Guide.asp#2)
Step 3: Select a Bar Code printing Method (http://www.gs1uk.org/about/Implementation_Guide.asp#3)
Step 4: Select a "Primary" Scanning Environment (http://www.gs1uk.org/about/Implementation_Guide.asp#4)
Step 5: Select a Bar Code (http://www.gs1uk.org/about/Implementation_Guide.asp#5)
Step 6: Pick a Bar Code Size (http://www.gs1uk.org/about/Implementation_Guide.asp#6)
Step 7: Format the Bar Code Text (http://www.gs1uk.org/about/Implementation_Guide.asp#7)
Step 8: Pick a Bar Code colour (http://www.gs1uk.org/about/Implementation_Guide.asp#8)
Step 9: Pick the Bar Code Placement (http://www.gs1uk.org/about/Implementation_Guide.asp#9)
Step 10: Build a Bar Code Quality Plan (http://www.gs1uk.org/about/Implementation_Guide.asp#10)

You can also get barcodes from barcode1.co.uk - about £17-20 for a single number - an affordable way to get started
