Hello Everyone,

Happy New Year! :) I am going through a lot of literature on starting and managing a small business. It has been very useful, but a bit too shallow so far. Could You advise me some books that describe starting a certain business in detail with a practical example(s)? By the way, any advice on books is VERY welcome. ;) I hope that I could bypass some beginner mistakes that way.

Million Thanks,

Do you have any particular type of business in mind when you say a "certain business"?

If you want a generic guide I have an ebook you can look at
www.startupright.co.uk/ebook

I can also get you a copy of a book called Small Business Big Difference, which is all case studies on specific issues within running a business.

Thank you Julia for the advice! I will get my hands on your book as soon as I can!

The book I am looking for right now is of a "street knowledge" type. A book that would describe how to solve specific situations that might be crucial to the small business. Maybe I am asking for too much.. or just too afraid of doing something wrong :)

By certain business I ment that the book concentrated for example only on selling jewelry online and describes all ins and outs of it. I like real-life example oriented books..

There are various books written by well known entrepreneurs about how they did it, maybe a few of those would be helpful?

eg the Costa Coffee people, the Beermat Entrepreneur etc.

Also there is a CD set being launched imminently which interviews quite a few of these kind of people , including some of those from Dragon's Den

Watch this space, I'll let you know....

Super! Thank you for your help!

I found The Beermat Entrepreneur on amazon.com, but somehow cannot find "Costa Coffee People". Could you give me the authors name please, so that I could give it another try..

I couldnt remember the title but will try and find it for you

Eduard,

Here are a couple:

Against the Odds - by Dyson who invented the new vacuum

Business As Usual - Anita Roddick

Anyone Can Do It: Building Coffee Republic - Sahar Hashemi

Upstart Start-Ups - various case studies by Ron Lieber

How I Made It; 40 Successful Entrpreneuers Reveal All - Rachel Bridge

The last one would be best as it has a broad range of industry sectors and is UK based.

You can find them all on Amazon but they are also on my website at www.smallbusinesssuccess.biz/general_small_business_advice.htm and www.smallbusinesssuccess.biz/small_business_start_up_support.htm

Hope this helps and happy reading!
