Get the Government to give small businesses a helping hand

Sign the petition to increase the VAT Registration Threshold to £100,000

In this unparalleled economic climate do you believe that enough it being done to support small businesses?

Should help be provided to assist them fight against the increasing price competition being applied by large companies, who can benefit from operational economies of scale?

Elaine Clark of CheapAccounting.co.uk believes that there is one thing that could provide a quick and immediate benefit to small businesses.

Increase the VAT Registration Threshold to £100,000

Elaine, a qualified Chartered Accountant, says

“This is a very easy thing for the Government to implement and it would demonstrate their commitment to supporting small businesses.

“The benefits to small businesses, particularly those dealing with end consumers, would be enormous. Not only would they be better placed to compete on price but the huge administration burden of accounting for VAT would be eliminated.

“Lets take a real example. I have a client who is just approaching the VAT registration threshold. They cannot increase their prices to cover the VAT to be paid over to HMRC as there is a large competitor in the vicinity and the price competition is tough. So they will have to absorb the VAT into their profit. It will probably mean the closure of their business and the loss of their livelihood”.

To lobby the government to implement this change, Elaine has set up an E-petition at the 10 Downing Street website.

“Let’s just hope the Government is serious about helping small businesses through the credit crunch and they implement this proposal very soon” says Elaine.

I do not believe the government is doing enough for small business.
I run an on-line retial business from home, single, have no discernable income, have no assets and cannot get bank loans to enable me to buy more stock.
I also, apparantly, live in an 'affluent' area - I am not affluent.
I have checked out the SGLG scheme at my bank, who informed me that these loans can only be approached through BERR/DTI, who charge a fee.
I cannot wait until I am a successful entreprenuer - then sticky stuff will hit the fan
