How much effect does this have when your site is being optimised?
Also do you do this for the home page or specific pages?

The reason for asking is that one of my team seems to think that though the site will be optimised, he thinks he is making a difference when he has nothing better to do at night by trying to get our website added to as many as he can. Is he a wasting his time?

Hi

Good keyword relevant links from other 'on topic' sites will make a difference to your sites rankings in search engines. This will complement your optimised site. Lots of keyworded hyperlinks pointing back to your site will increase the importance of the page -as the search engine will deem this page as important for those particular keyword/phrases. Especially when the page is also optimised on the keywords/phrases used in the anchor text of the reciprocal link pointing at you.

Does anyone know the website that allows you to type in your domain and it will tell you which sites are linked to it in both directions? I found it ages ago accidentally but can’t deliberately find it.

Go to google and type in "link:www.your-domain.com" as the search and that will tell you what sites google has found that link to you!
and yes it is important to build up link popularity, although as hil says relevant is better!

It is also important to know that text links are always better than banners. The keywords used in the link text are extra very important. Put your most important keyword for the page you want to link to in the beggining of the link text.

It is important to have links from websites which have content closely related to your own! This way those links are considered to be more important for the search engines.

Avoid link farms and text link exchange schemes as much as possible. Most will get your site penalised by the search engines (especially google).
