total mind blank..been working all night and i'm going to post a stupid question:

what does it mean when someone says 'let me know when you've changed the name servers' <<< total mind blank haven't done anything with name servers for 2 years as my web host deals with that for me these days.

name servers are what your website points to to recognise the web server. usually in the form ns1.nameserver.com etc

oh yes..so ns1...ns2 etc all connected to the whole dns thing!

how do i change them? is that just when i start uploading the material via the ftp settings to the server space thats been allocated to me.

Usually wherever you registered your domain -"the registrar" ie enom, com, 123reg.co.uk, etc - will have a control panel you log in to to set the nameservers for your domain.

I assumehe person asking the question has given you new nameserver addresses to use for a domain and wants to know when you've updated the details at the registrar

yep thats the thing...my web host has dealt with this for 2 years so i havent paid much attention..but someone is offering me a free space for a charity based website and they've sent across the details of the name servers and the ftp login information and thats it...they just want me to tell them when the name servers are changed! but i haven't done that in yeeeaarrrsss and i don't want to muck up his work area as he's hosting a few websites for other people.

Hiya,

NameServers are the Internet's phonebook, if you need to know where to go and you're on a windows machine try this;

Start a command shell; START > RUN > CMD
Enter NSLOOKUP and press enter - you should get a few lines of blurb and an > prompt.
Enter set type=NS to switch to NameServer mode (not the correct case for this statement)
Enter the domain name you're interested in (the website without the www. at the start)
C:\>NSLOOKUP
*** Can't find server name for address 192.168.0.253: Non-existent domain
*** Default servers are not available
Default Server: UnKnown
Address: 192.168.0.253
> set type=NS
> greenwood-it.co.uk
Server: UnKnown
Address: 192.168.0.253
Non-authoritative answer:
greenwood-it.co.uk nameserver = dns0.easily.co.uk
greenwood-it.co.uk nameserver = dns1.easily.co.uk
>exit
C:\>

This should then return the names of the associated NameServers for that domain. This will give you the clue you need to find the DNS hosting company you need to contact. The example above shows that my DNS is hosted by Easily.co.uk. This is quite often different from your web hosting provider and is more likely to be the business you used to originally purchase the domain name.

well i know the company that has the hosting, they've sent me the list of 4 name servers and the relevant ip addresses. they've sent the ftp site name, username and password.

they say they can't create the domain name until the name servers are changed..but how do i actually change the name servers?

when i type in the ns1.!!!blah blah it comes up with an apache c panel and http server blurb ... what do i do with that? its only a singular page that i want to upload but there is no domain yet..just the hosting space.

Where did you register the domain? Better still, give us the domain if you want and we can do a whois to see who the registrar is.

The name servers are:
> ns1.enixns.com (64.91.230.240)
> ns2.enixns.com (209.59.140.101)
> ns3.enixns.com (69.16.196.38)
> ns4.enixns.com (72.52.144.131)
>
> FTP details as follows:-
>
> site ftp://ndrw.co.uk/ (ftp://ndrw.co.uk/)
> username persons email address
> pass password

thats the information i've been sent! and for some reason i'm having one of those days where i have no idea what to do with that information...the stuff at the bottom is for dreamweaver but the stuff at the top i've totally forgotten what to do with. god damn dreamweaver for making it too easy for me.

Esk247

That domain name hasn't been registered. Have you registered in the past 24 hours or so?

Don't think the OP has put a domain registration order through, all .uk domains are registered instantly if the provider is passing them to nominet directly.

no because the person with the hosting (he's doing it as a freebie for a friend) has said in his email:

Let me know when you change the name servers then i can create the domain. <<< thats why i've got confused..i normally register the domain then buy a hosting package..wait 24 hours and all the settings are sent to me..this is the other way round..hosting is now open and ready to be used he wants me to change the name servers then he creates the domain.

So you need to go to a domain registrar and register the domain, change the name servers job done, will take 5mins of your time :)

it sounds like by "create the domain" he means set it up on his servers.

You've got yourself confused - if you value your time, go to CSNM Hosting (http://www.csnewmedia.co.uk/)and pay the couple of quid to have it all taken care of for you.

Otherwise you need to register the domain yourself and set the nameservers to those listed above.

ah well thats what i normally do.

1) go to redstation (or such like) register my .co.uk or .com domain

tra la la

wait for that to be done and get the confirmation

2) go to the hosting page and select hosting at £69 per year first year free

get all the settings in the email for FTP and email server/settings and off i go..then just upload through dreamweaver!

thought i was being daft! i'll go register the domain first and then make sure its all set to those name servers.:)

No problem, you're welcome!

Hiya,

So www_ndrw_co_uk is the website in question as it matches the FTP site. This is where you upload your website content too and is totally separate from the DNS name servers.

NSLOOKUP on ndrw returns the enixns Name Servers as you mentioned. Browsing to www_enixns_co_uk returns a default cPanel web page which suggests there is something missing from this URL, but it's probably the valid server. I'm not a cPanel user, so hopefully someone else can help you.

www_dream-hosting_co_uk seem to be involved with this server, so perhaps a call to their support people may give the answer - especially as you have the login and passwords.

Good luck.
