We've been selling our quiz e-product using a cart plus PAYPAL and we set the VAT in Paypal. We note you can only do this one country at a time.

All the sales so far have been to the UK (we reckon) and they have all resulted in a payment of £7.99 but one sale looks like its from Ireland (guy has an Irish name and the total amount coming through was £6.94 - i.e. no VAT) - £6.94 is the basic price of the product as we have set it in the cart software)

So what do we do? - do we have to go and set the VAT for every country in Paypal?

Anyone know?

I have just clicked the top link (and the second), and it took me to paypal and the total was £6.95 and i am in the UK.

But even europe would still have to pay VAT.

Yeah - 6.95 is correct (not 6.94 as mentioned above - my mistake) paypal adds VAT when you go through and actually make the purchase so it will add up to 7.99.

I'm just wondering what to do in PAypal for other Euro countries. Do we just set 15% for all countries? Do we have to go through and set each paypal country individually?

I know when you setup standard paypal buttons you can add the VAT amount in a sperate field, so when you add items into paypal it shows up on the first screen.

I would simply add the vat to the the overall price and make it a VAT inclusive price, as long as it will not interfear with your accounting software or any other bits and pieces.

Setting an all-inclusive price is maybe a good idea and would appear to simplify things but I understand that I'm supposed to NOT charge VAT to people outside the EU - so how would that work?

What if someone from the USA buys a quiz at 7.99 and this includes VAT, is that OK? Does it become their choice and effectively mean that the price of the download to the USA is 7.99 NOT including VAT??? - even though the their receipt will show that the price includes VAT...?

Man, this is complex!

It all depends, TBH if you have not had sales outside the UK or not enough to worry about set the £7.99 at a fixed price. You can always refund the VAT is needed.

If your none EU sales are something to worry about you can look into setting up two a proper checkout to state shipping location.

In other words don't worry about it until you need to, but make sure you get the cash you can alway correct it later with easy, compared to trying to get extra money.
