Hi

Very soon I will be starting a project whereby I will be responsible for the SEO of a site, the site in question does not have a presence on the web at all yet, so everything will be from scratch.

I am totally fine with the techniques I need to employ for the on-page and off-page SEO, but it is the submission to Search Engines I am a bit unclear on. Like, do I need to submit to every popular search engine and directory? will some Search Engines just pick the site up? also, how often to submit? any tips would be gratefully received.

All the Best
Phil

Hi Phil,
I've answered yoru PM, but to let everyone else know....

Resubmitting to search engines is not necessary, because if you do your link building properly then the search engines will find you anyway through their crawlers. This is true for MSN, Google, Altavista and Yahoo at the very least.
I usually just initially submit to Google but not the others, and its never failed me.

I very rarely submit to any search engines anymore. The best thing to do is simply add a link to the new site on an existing listed site and the new site should be picked up in a few weeks at the most. Any changes you make to the site after that will automatically be picked up when the crawlers return.

Its worth submitting to Google, just to get the crawlers started but providing you are building backlinks you will get found anyway....

Its worth submitting to dmoz.org (just once) as it feeds thousands of directories (Google Directory included!)

I would suggest that you submit no more than once a month. It can do absolutely no harm. You have to think about the hundreds if not thousands of other search engines to submit to, cause they serve niche markets.

It is true that you don't even need to submit to the major ones, as they will find you for sure.
