VAT office sent a Red Immediate Payment Demand notice. Nothing previous, no assessment, no bill, no visit or inspection, no late returns etc etc.
Our accountant replied with a request for a breakdown/explanation/assessment etc.
No reply.
10 months later we get another Red Immediate Payment demand notice.
This seems like a bit of a computer error? Can we tell them no, partic as they made no reply to our request and then took 10months to follow up.

OK - and does your accountant do your returns? How many letters do you need?

Nope we do all the returns, the only reason the accountant got involved is becaue the VAT don't usually send out a red immediate demand for payment without sending out an assessment or other documentation first. It was all a bit abnormal, as the 10 month gap seems to emphasise.

Agree with you there Boxby. Does seem a bit odd. We've been filing online for a couple of years and one of the 'pleasures' is if something is a bit amiss, they send you an alert.
Not saying it will resolve the problem but it might be worth registering for online filing - only takes a couple of minutes although you have to wait a few days for the activation and password stuff. All you have to remember then is NOT to send a paper return. They still send a reminder that your filing date is due.

Just a thought, might sound a bit like stating the obvious, but is the VAT reg number definately yours??
Next I'd call the local office that issued the demand - you'll generally get much more sense from them on the phone rather than send a letter.

One of my clients, whose typical VAT liabaility is about £1,200 per quarter, rang me in a panic about a year ago. He'd just received a red demand for the immediate payment of over £10k. When I looked at the letter he'd received it showed the name of his company but the VAT number shown was not his. We wrote the the VAT office asking for clarification. We never got a reply to our letter but equally they never chased up the demand either.

Delta SI is Jenni's new man
Jenni and I have merged our practices. She is the boss and I'm the tea boy.

What period does the demand state it is for?
Has 10 months interest been applied since you last seen it?
KidsBeeHappy

None, no period, no dates, no information at all.
It's just a demand notice for immediate payment.
(that's the information that we requested 10 months ago!)

So if Jenni is the senior partner and you are the tea boy who does the work?

So if Jenni is the senior partner and you are the tea boy who does the work?
Umm, good point. That might explain why the revenue is so low.

A man goes into a pet shop to buy a parrot. "OK" says the saleman "This one here is £100, this one £250 and this one is £500".
"Eh?" says the man "How come they vary in price".
"Well" says the salesman "The one at £100 is a chartered accountant and the one at £250 is a chartered accountant and auditor.".
"What does the one at £500 do then?" asks the man.
"Actually" says the salesman "I have never seen that one do a damn thing but the other two say he's the senior partner".

Hi Boxby
I'd ring them and arrange a "routine" meeting to review their account records, check for errors and ask them to explain the letters they sent you. Tell them you expect reasonable accuracy in processing your payments as you may impose penalties for any errors. Tell them that you are always available to offer any advise or support should they need it ;)
