Hi, I have a small business that I'm running from my house, I wanted to build a website for the business but I don't want to spend hundreds of dollars, my other problem is that I don't know how to build a web site, I only know basic HTML scripting. Does any one know a cheap hosting server or a web site I can use.
Thanks,
Gil

Contrary to current opinion most UK webhosts will still accept payment in traditional old british pounds (£). It may be having a rough time but it isn't finished yet!

Look at some of the easy website editors like Serif Webplus that come free from hosts like http://www.donhost.co.uk/

They are simple enough to create a basic webpage. Once you have some budget, invest in some good quality web design to really get things cooking!

And good luck!

dream-hosting.co.uk

I use them for several of my websites and they only charge £9.99 for a year. Try having a look on Google for 'free website templates' there's loads of sites and templates to choose from.

I'm using a website of Tobizer.com company,
it great, it alow you to biuld your own website (without knowing even html).
it has all kind of features that you can use,
thay have also a search engine that you can look for other companies or services
and the best part is that they put you up in serch engiens like google.

Save time goto homestead building a website is as easy as falling out of bed. I build my own sites but I have been doing it for years. But in all honesty I would goto homestead dot com. I would never have survived in business if I did not have a website.

Why not pay a professional to design & build the website for you?

I think your best bet is to mix and match. Use a free service to design the basic site, but as time goes on you may decide that you want facilities that requrie more in depth coding (online cataogues, membership administration and so on.) For these it is worth having a web developer that you can talk to who will advise you of the best options and alternatives. Paying a devloper for small contributions when needed, but desiging the overall site yourself would be both cost effective and flexible enough to allow for later development.

It's good to do your first site yourself, if you can. Even if you need to get a professional on board at a later date, by prototyping what you want first, you can save time / money on later enhancements.

Just don't full in to the trap (not just with web design) that's it's cheaper to spend all day going around in circles doing something which would take an experienced web designer say 30mins, if you having something better you can be doing with your time!

Does anyone get the impression these are spam postings? I.e a new member posts up a question, then another new member responds with a blatent spam post, A la 'shomrat'?

Sorry mate I don't quite follow. Someone posts a question begging a response from members who have some experience in that area. They get a response, which as far as I can see from these posts does not include begging for business. How does this equate to spam?

Indeed... if someone posts asking for something that I do have to offer... shoudl I refrain from offering it in case they accept?

SPAM is unwanted, uninvited and usually misleading. The advice here as far as I can see is sincere. Why ruin the whole spirit of mutual advice and support?

What he means is a new member posts asking where to host a web site, then another new member pops up with a solution.

I think he's implying they're probably the same person. And I'd agree - it happens all the time in forums.

If the OP returns then we'll stand corrected of course ;)

I know what you're saying, but I could smell something fishy.

Seems my instincts were right. Apology accepted :D

Hi Gil

You can get a wordpress blog hosted for free if you pick one of the standard themes. They are very easy to get up an running and for a few pounds you can choose your own url without the blog bit in it. Here are a couple of blogs for you to have a look at to give you an idea of what is possible - these did cost a bit more becuase they have extra bits added in but you can still do somehting very similar for nought.

www.brucebird.com and www.michelfortin.com

There is also a Wordpress for dummies book which is useful.

Kind regards

Sian
