View Full Version : Sock and awe, Alex Tew and the power of PR

Alex Tew, the young entrepreneur behind The Million Dollar Homepage (http://www.milliondollarhomepage.com), is at it again!

Following the recent George Bush 'shoe attack' in Iraq, Tew created Sock and Awe (http://www.sockandawe.com/), an online game which allows players to 'throw' shoes at the outgoing US president. He says he created it 'just for fun' but in just a few days the site has been accessed by over a million unique users and has received significant press coverage from the likes of Reuters and AP. Tew has now put the game up for sale on eBay (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140289808336#ebayphotohosting) to raise money for his new start-up PopJam. The top bid has increased by over £200 in the time I've been writing this post.

Whatever you think of such publicity stunts, it certainly demonstrates the value of PR!

Been there twice and both times the server is stuffed. Good luck to him but another example of the emperors new clothes, would not touch it with a barge pole, he is gaming the system and those that follow should be named and shamed.

i'm still not convinced..he appears to of had it far too easy to me...he has too many minions working for free just to promote him to the world.

He was successful with the milliondollarhomepage, well done to him i say, he thought of a unique idea and marketed it well, there are a lot of jealous people about.

Think that could be my fault as I linked to soakandawe.com! I've correct it now and the site is working.

I have created a number of sites like this over the years but have always been very cautious about flipping them to unsuspecting members of the public on sites like eBay.

The thought of millions of unique for just a few grand sounds great but if you review the site in 6 weeks you will see its dropped to a few thousand a day at most and the majority of the visitors will not be interested in buying anything so monetising will be very difficult.
