I've only recently started to use Google Alerts, and have yet to read up on it, so forgive my ignorance, and if I'm incorrect with my observation.

Is Google Alerts a great tool for telling you that either your content has been indexed or something that links to your site has been indexed.

Quite useful for watching linking projects.

The only relevant thing google alerts has brought up for us is one of my posts on this forum.

The other reports it brings back are generally italian websites with the word mattonella in them.

Err no...

All google alerts will do is tell you if new pages appear in on page 1/2 for your chosen keywords. It can tell you if your competitors are doing better then you!

For checking if pages on your site are indexed, go for Google Sitemaps (part of Google Webmaster tools). Create an xml sitemap and point Google Sitemaps to it, add an HTML validation file (Google Sitemaps tells you how to do this) and you'll get a whole load of information about your site, what's indexed, when, etc.
