Hi there
We run a small computer company in bucks, we have had a small sign on the road side for over ten years now, until friday when i got a phone call saying that it must go.
when i asked the person who do i contact to get permission he said that would be me and know you cant have permission?
Our sign has been out there for such a long time why now? what can we do about this.
Thanks in advance for your help

I don't know what the process is for getting small signs next to the road, but I would ask your council or check its website to find out guidelines on adding them or requesting approval.
There has to be a process to follow and even if it ends up on this chaps desk for him to reject it, also a process for appeal.
I'd sniff around their website first as they are often laden with information of this sort, although it can take some finding.

Councils are really funny about things like this.
On one business my family took over they had flags flying on the grounds of the business advertising different brands of boats and sailing gear that were sold there - been there for a decade at least.
Then out of the blue the council made us take down all signage visable from the road and apply for permission to put it back up - They even made them take down the hours of business sign on the main gate.
It all ended up in court too and all over the papers too for some reason. Probably as a warning to their new hard line about shop signs put up without permission...
Their new pet hate is security shutters on shop windows at night. They've all but banned them because they portray a negative image about the town.
So tread carefully!

Had the same problem 2 years ago with a senior figure in a council, he offerred me a shop as long as the shutters were taken down. I replied no problem as long as he paid for 24 hr policing outside the shop and insure it, since few insurance companies will insure a shop without shutters.
He changed his mind after a few phone calls, and the shop, or I should now say shops, are still empty 2 yrs later.
They live in a different world.

Just a thought - have you considered sponsoring a roundabout with the Council. It might be a good alternative?

They just don't seem like to see businesses becoming successful. It's just things like this that make businesses either close or go out of business with the reduction in sales.

when i equired with my local council was told that direction arrows can not be put on the signs. so couldn'y sponcer the roundabout at the end of the road and i direct traffic to me.
Why not an A board which you put out each morning? surely you dont need permission for those?

I'm afraid that you do need permission for A boards and in fact Wolverhampton council have introduced a charge for the application which must be paid irrespective of whether permission is granted or not:eek:

And AMEY have decided that these are no-go too.

Why not ask a friendly local farmer if you can put a sign in his field ? You then put it on the back of an old trailer which can be moved around, seen it done loads up this end of the world.

Just remember to pick it up when it blows over. These signs do the opposite of their intention when they're upside down battered and broken in fields.

Only if they are made from sticky tape and toilet roll tubes:p
